According to Tencent, WeChat had 762 million global users in March 2016, making it the most popular messaging app in the world. As eMarketer's new report "WeChat in China: A Massive, Engaging App" shows, WeChat is the most popular mobile app in China.

Tencent does not break down the number of WeChat users in China, but according to a survey by QuestMobile, the number of monthly active users of WeChat reached 706.7 million in March 2016, accounting for 93% of WeChat's global accounts, and WeChat has become the most popular mobile application in China.

Tencent's QQ mobile app ranked second with 554 million monthly active users, followed by Alibaba's shopping app Taobao with 346 million users. Sina Weibo, once the most popular social media platform in China, has fallen to seventh place with 271 million users.

Other surveys have mirrored QuestMobile's findings, with Kantar finding in 2015 that more than three-quarters of Chinese social media users said WeChat was their most frequently used social media or chat app, with 35% choosing Weibo.

WeChat’s appeal to marketers is not just its huge number of users. WeChat users visit frequently and stay for a long time.

According to Tencent Zhiku’s survey in the fourth quarter of 2015 and March 2016, more than 90% of WeChat users access the app every day, and more than 3/5 of users visit the app more than 10 times a day.

Moreover, the percentage of WeChat users who access the app more than 30 times a day increased to 36% in this year’s survey, up from 25% last year.

More than half of Chinese WeChat users spend more than an hour a day on the platform, and nearly one-fifth of them spend more than four hours a day on the platform.

What’s even more attractive to marketers is that WeChat’s primary users are still the age group that marketers are most interested in. According to the first “WeChat Influence Report,” 86% of WeChat users are between the ages of 18 and 35. Consumers in this age group are important because, according to a December 2015 survey by Boston Consulting Group and AliResearch, these consumers will contribute 65% of China’s consumption growth over the next five years.
