Experian: Data shows that American adults spend an average of 58 minutes on their smartphones every day

New data from Experian Marketing Services shows that adults in the United States spend an average of 58 minutes a day on their smartphones. On average, smartphone users spend 26% of their time on making calls and 20% on sending messages; 16% on social networking and 14% on accessing mobile web accounts; 9% and 8% on sending emails and playing games, and 2% on daily applications such as taking photos and navigating.

Average amount of time American adults spend on their smartphones per day

*Activities include native smartphone features and apps downloaded by users. For example, “watching videos” includes both native smartphone players and online apps such as YouTube and Netflix.

While there's no clear winner, the data does show some differences across smartphone operating systems. For starters, iPhone users spend 1 hour and 15 minutes a day on their iPhones, 26 minutes more than the typical Android user.

In addition, there are significant differences in the usage patterns of iPhone and Android users. For example, Android users spend 28% of their time chatting, while iPhone users only spend 22%. Android users also contribute more to browsing websites than iPhone users. Conversely, iPhone users spend more time on texting, emailing, taking photos and social networking.

It is worth noting that in terms of reading, the proportion of this activity is less than 1% (one can only sigh that times are changing).

So, what do users do most often with their smartphones? The chart above gives a clearer picture of the activity of various apps.

The largest share are chatting (79%) and text messaging (76%), followed by browsing websites (62%), email (61%) and social networks (52%); the least popular are watching videos (2.3%) and reading (0.5%).

Given that nearly 98% of users don’t watch videos on their phones on a typical day, it’s not surprising that adults spend so little time on their smartphones each day. However, among the small number of people who do watch videos, they watch videos an average of 5 minutes per day, 4.2 times per day.
