eMarketer: Facebook is the social network of choice for the unknown generation

This often overlooked group remains an important customer base for digital marketers

Although a much smaller group than the Baby Boomers or Millennials, the Nobodies are not in absolute terms. This significant group - 65 million people - often spend money for their children and themselves. In addition, the Nobodies have grown up with the Internet. Almost all of them are online, and most use social networks and smartphones. According to a new eMarketer report, "Generation Nobodies: The Forgotten Generation Worth Remembering," the Nobodies have become a natural target for marketers using digital technology to reach consumers.

Although their use of the web largely predates the Facebook era, the Anonymous generation has also incorporated social networks into their digital activities. eMarketer calculates that three-quarters of American Anonymous generations logged into social networks at least monthly in 2013.

The social network most Generation Nobodies use is Facebook. eMarketer predicts that just under two-thirds of Generation Nobodies in the U.S. will visit Facebook at least monthly this year.

Although, they are more or less unadventurous or indiscriminate in their use of other social platforms. Netizens predict that 30.0% of American netizens aged 18-24 will log in to Twitter at least monthly in 2013, while the anonymous generation will only log in half of this number.

Similarly, a survey of U.S. mobile phone users by the Pew Research Center's Internet Project in October 2013 found that less than half of respondents aged 30-49 were able to use Instagram as much as younger people, with the figures being 18% and 43% respectively.

In a sense, the social habits of the faceless generation on the Facebook center graph can help marketers reach them more easily. Because the faceless generation is unlikely to try the latest social service that pops up, a brand that wants to communicate with them in a social environment can ensure that they are found through this most obvious feature.
