Some patients often feel an unexplained dull pain above their right breast, which is particularly intense during menstruation. The pain subsides after menstruation. Some women experience this breast phenomenon until menopause. This symptom is uniformly called mastalgia in medicine. There are many causes of its disease, which can be mainly divided into two categories: physiological and pathological. 1. Concept Mastodynia is a disease that mainly manifests as breast pain. In the clinical work of breast specialists, mastalgia is the most common disease for patients to visit the hospital. Foreign studies have found that about 60-70% of women will experience varying degrees of breast pain in their lifetime, and about 10-20% of these patients have more severe pain symptoms. 2. Causes There are currently three main theories about the cause of mastalgia: increased estrogen secretion from the ovaries, insufficient progesterone production, and hyperprolactinemia. 3. Classification 1. Cyclic pain Cyclic breast pain usually occurs 1-2 weeks before menstruation. This type of breast pain is usually widespread, and symptoms of pain occur in both breasts at the same time, sometimes radiating to the axillary area or the upper limb on the same side. The pain will be relieved with the arrival of menstruation. What we see in clinical practice is that in a considerable number of women, this situation can persist until menopause. 2. Non-cyclical breast pain This type of pain often manifests itself in one side of the breast, and usually the pain occurs in a certain area of the breast. The main causes of non-cyclical pain are: cysts, periductal inflammation, traumatic fat necrosis, diabetic breast disease, tumor formation, etc. 4. Several common breast pain 1. Breast pain during adolescence The earliest breast pain in girls usually occurs between the ages of 9 and 13. At this time, girls' breasts begin to develop, with nipples first bulging and a slight feeling of pain. After menarche, it will disappear on its own as the breasts mature during puberty. 2. Premenstrual breast pain Many women experience breast fullness, hardness, and tenderness during menstruation . In severe cases, the breasts may become swollen and painful even with a slight vibration or collision, and the original granular or nodular feeling may become more obvious. This is caused by increased estrogen levels in the body before menstruation, breast hyperplasia, and edema of the breast interstitial tissue. After the menstrual period, the above changes disappear. 3. Breast pain during pregnancy Breast pain after pregnancy is caused by the placenta and villi secreting large amounts of estrogen, progesterone and prolactin, which cause breast hyperplasia and breast enlargement. This is a kind of physiological pain, which is in preparation for postpartum breastfeeding. 4. Postpartum breast pain Postpartum breast pain is mostly caused by mastitis. In addition to breast pain, there will also be fever and local lumps in the breast, which is mainly caused by blocked milk ducts and milk accumulation. Therefore, breastfeeding should be started as soon as possible after delivery to prevent excessive accumulation of milk in the breasts. 5. Breast pain caused by breast hyperplasia can radiate to the armpits , shoulders and back. When touching the breasts, you can feel movable lumps of varying sizes with unclear edges. It can also be affected by menstruation and emotions. This type of breast pain is caused by metabolic disorders, accumulation of metabolic waste, qi stagnation and blood stasis in the body. You can take some medicines to promote blood circulation, remove blood stasis and regulate endocrine. 7. Cancerous breast pain: When breast pain persists , the pain is fixed and radiates to the shoulders and back, and there is a sense of weight in the shoulders, there is a possibility of breast cancer. It must be taken seriously and you should go to the hospital for examination as soon as possible. |
