Pew Research: 2013 Annual US Social Media Survey Report

The Pew Research Center recently released a survey report on the use of social networks by American adults. The data showed that Facebook is still the king of social networks. Among the respondents, 71% said they use Facebook, and it should be noted that people who use at least one social network account for 73% of the total. The other major social networks are LinkedIn, Pinterest, and Twitter, with a proportion of 22%, 21%, and 17% respectively. The business forms of the former two have never grown in China, and Weibo is also very different from Twitter.

The report also investigated how often people use social networks. Facebook is still the first, with 63% of daily active users. Instagram is second, with 57% of daily active users. Weekly and monthly active users are also very similar to Facebook. Twitter and Pinterest are much lower, only 46% and 23% respectively. LinkedIn is the worst, with only 13% of daily active users. No wonder LinkedIn has to redo its content system to attract users.

From a demographic perspective, each social network has its own segmented population. Pinterest is particularly popular among young women, who browse for four times as much time as men. LinkedIn is popular among college students and high-income users, with the largest age group of users being 30-49 years old, while other social networks are usually 18-29 years old. Twitter is popular among urbanites, young people and non-white groups.
