According to Horace Dediu, asymco market analyst, RIM's smartphone market share in the second quarter of its fiscal year 2012 was not optimistic. During the period, RIM shipped 10.6 million phones (although actual phone sales reached 13.7 million units), and the market share of BlackBerry's tablet PlayBook fell sharply (shipments were only 200,000 units). Compared with Apple or Samsung, RIM's mobile phone shipments are less than half of those competitors in the previous quarter. Even HTC is outperforming RIM. RIM's position in the smartphone market may fall to fifth place. Despite the launch of new products such as BlackBerry 7 and PlayBook in 2011, BlackBerry shipments still fell 11% year-on-year and 18% from the first quarter. Dediu expects RIM's smartphone share to fall to single digits (but the smartphone market is growing at an average quarterly rate of 77%). In addition, RIM's profit margin is also declining, from 21% to 13%. |
