[First Aid Tips] Issue 23 - What should you do after a head injury?

Head trauma is a very common trauma. Because the scalp has rich blood supply, bleeding often does not stop after trauma. In this case, what should we do?

1. Don't panic. Use cotton cloth or a towel folded into a small piece to press on the wound to stop the bleeding.

2. Do not cover the wound directly over a large area. Sometimes, due to rupture of small arteries, bleeding may occur, and covering the wound over a large area cannot suppress the bleeding point and achieve the effect of stopping bleeding.

3. Do not sprinkle so-called hemostatic powder on the wound. This will not only fail to stop bleeding, but also increase the difficulty of doctor's debridement and increase the probability of infection.

4. After head trauma, most victims will feel thirsty, but they are not allowed to drink water.

5. When a serious trauma causes the victim to become comatose and vomit, the victim should be laid flat immediately with the head tilted to one side, and the mouth and vomit should be cleaned to prevent aspiration.

6. When the victim has ear or nose bleeding or bloody fluid (cerebrospinal fluid) after head trauma, the victim's head should be tilted toward the side where the fluid is flowing out to allow the fluid to flow out. Do not block the ears or nose.

7. Seek medical treatment on your own or call 120 for emergency services depending on the severity of your injury.

8. There is another situation: when you shake your head vigorously, the intracranial tissue will also be damaged. If you experience dizziness, nausea, vomiting, and poor mental state after shaking or bumping, it is recommended to go to the hospital for a CT scan immediately.
