When Zheng Xuan, a master of Confucian classics in the Han Dynasty, was commenting on the "End of the Wind" in the Book of Songs, he repeatedly wrote: "Nowadays, when ordinary people sneeze, they say 'people say I', which is a relic of the ancient times."

In many places, it is popular to say a few auspicious words after sneezing. This tradition comes from a story in Buddhist scriptures. At that time, the Indians believed that when people sneeze, the surrounding Yakshas will come and suck away their energy, which will make people sick or accelerate aging.
