"Heat syndrome"

What disease is this?

How serious is it?

How to correctly judge

Is the baby cold?

Let’s learn together below~

What is heat stroke syndrome?

Infant heatstroke syndrome, also known as blanket (hypoxia) syndrome, blanket syndrome, etc., often occurs in cold seasons and is more common in infants under 1 year old. It is caused by excessive warmth or being covered for too long, with high fever, sweating, dehydration, convulsions, respiratory and circulatory failure as the main manifestations.

The disease has an acute onset and severe symptoms, which can lead to multiple organ dysfunction throughout the body. The mortality rate can reach about 20%. Some survivors may have sequelae of the central nervous system, such as secondary epilepsy and mental retardation.

Why are the consequences of heat stroke so serious?

The body surface area of newborns and infants is relatively larger than that of adults, so they dissipate heat faster than adults. If they are kept warm for too long or too much, it will affect the baby's heat dissipation and put the body in a high fever state.

High fever will cause the body to dissipate heat faster through sweating, which will lead to a large amount of water loss, dehydration, changes in plasma osmotic pressure, and even the development of hypovolemic shock.

In addition, high fever can lead to hypermetabolism and increased oxygen consumption of the body, causing acid-base imbalance and accelerating tissue hypoxia, resulting in damage to important organ functions, especially brain dysfunction, and causing convulsions, coma, etc.

How to tell if your baby is cold?

When winter comes, what parents worry about most is that their baby will be cold. So how do they judge whether the baby is cold or warm?

Most parents are accustomed to judging the temperature of their baby by touching his hands and feet. If the baby's hands and feet are warm, they think the clothes are appropriate. If the baby's hands and feet are cold, they will keep adding clothes for fear that the baby will catch a cold. This is actually wrong.

The baby's hands and feet are generally exposed to the outside and dissipate heat faster. In addition, the peripheral circulation is relatively slow, so the temperature of the hands and feet is generally lower and they feel cool to the touch. It is inappropriate to judge the temperature simply by the hands and feet.

It is recommended that parents judge by touching the back of the baby's neck. If it feels warm, it is normal. If it feels a little cool, it means the baby needs to put on more clothes.

What else should we pay attention to in keeping warm in winter?

If it is a baby under 1 year old, do not wrap the baby too tightly or too thickly when going out. The mouth and nose should be exposed. If the head sweats a lot, take off the clothes in time, because the baby's heat dissipation is mainly through the head. Once the baby wears too much, the head will sweat a lot. This is also the reason why children are prone to sweating on the head after exercise.

In addition, it should be emphasized that breastfed babies should avoid sleeping under the mother's armpit with the nipple in their mouth, as this can easily cause suffocation.

For older children, the temperature difference between indoor and outdoor is relatively large in winter. If they go from indoors to outdoors, they can choose clothes with good thermal insulation effect inside and outer coat with good windproof and waterproof performance. It is not recommended to wear too many layers of clothes, nor is it recommended to wear too tight clothes. If they go from outdoors to indoors, do not take off the outer coat immediately. You should adapt to the indoor temperature before taking off the outer coat, because the baby's body temperature regulation function is slower than that of adults.

Every parent has his or her own habits and methods in taking care of their children, and as long as the baby grows up healthily, they are appropriate.
