Study finds: It’s better for adults to sleep together!

How do you usually sleep? Do you prefer to sleep alone or with your partner? (Hahahaha, singles can ignore this)

Most people with partners still sleep together, but some people prefer to sleep alone because their partners snore or grind their teeth too loudly. Some married couples also start sleeping in separate rooms when their relationship becomes dull.

So, which is better, sleeping alone or sleeping with someone?

Recently, a new study from the University of Arizona showed that adults who sleep with a partner sleep better than those who sleep alone. The relevant research results have been published in the recent journal Sleep.

The researchers analyzed data collected on sleep, diet, environment, health activities, and social activities from 1,007 adults, and assessed sleep conditions in detail, including co-sleeping, sleeping alone, degree of insomnia, and snoring.

The results found that adults who slept with their partners at night reported less severe insomnia and fatigue than those who never shared a bed with their partners. In addition, adults who slept with their partners fell asleep faster, stayed asleep longer, and had a lower risk of sleep apnea.

However, adults who sleep with their children at night mostly report relatively severe insomnia and a higher risk of sleep apnea.

The researchers also found that adults who shared a bed with a partner had lower depression, anxiety and stress scores, higher social support scores, and higher satisfaction with their lives and relationships than those who slept alone. Adults who shared a bed with their children also reported greater stress.

Overall, sleeping with a partner was associated with better sleep quality and overall mental health. Sleeping with children, on the other hand, was generally associated with poorer sleep.

"Even if your partner snores and tosses and turns frequently, his or her company is still a definite benefit to your sleep," said Michael Grandner, author of the paper and director of the Sleep and Health Research Program at the University of Arizona.
