Can eating fish eyes throughout childhood really prevent myopia?

Can eating fish eyes throughout childhood really prevent myopia?

When I was a kid, I often heard the elderly say that eating fish eyes can improve eyesight. For the sake of good eyesight, I would dig out fish eyes and eat them every time. As a result, after eating them for a whole childhood, I still couldn't escape the clutches of glasses. Can fish eyes really improve eyesight?

After consulting the literature, we found that some patents pointed out that the fish eyeball tissue and fish eye socket tissue, after concentrated extraction, can relieve visual fatigue, and have a relieving effect on symptoms such as eye pain, eye swelling, photophobia, blurred vision, foreign body sensation and tearing caused by visual fatigue. This effect may be related to the trace elements contained in fish eyes and the n-3 fatty acids rich in eye socket tissue.

Human experiments have shown that taking 600 mg of fish socket or fish eyeball tissue extract daily for 60 consecutive days can improve eye discomfort symptoms by more than 50%. The combination of 300 mg of fish socket + 300 mg of fish eyeball tissue extract can improve the improvement rate by more than 80%, which does have certain positive effects.

Fish eye extracts are effective, so why is it that eating fish eyes for a whole childhood has no effect? This is the difference between food and extracts.

The 600mg of extract consumed per day in the experiment is roughly equivalent to about 10 fish eyes. Consuming it for 60 consecutive days means that 600 fish eyes were consumed in 60 days, which is equivalent to 300 fish! I believe that if we use the method of digging fish eyes when eating fish as a child, no one should be able to eat fish eyes for 60 consecutive days and eat 300 fish eyes!

In addition, the proportion of fish eyes in the fish body is very small. The eye of an ordinary-sized fish weighs only about 10 grams. Compared with a whole fish that weighs more than 500 grams, the nutrients that fish eyes can provide are really limited. It is better to eat the fish meat directly to supplement more n-3 fats that are beneficial to the eyes.

If you want to improve your eye health, aside from fish eye extract, you might as well focus on these nutrients:

Zinc is present in high levels in the retina and choroid, acting as a metabolic coenzyme and participating in the metabolism and transport of retinol. If zinc is deficient, it may cause retinal epithelial lesions and gradually form myopia.

Copper is an important component of eye tissues. It is rich in corneal epithelium and retina, and is involved in biotransformation, electron transfer, redox and other processes. If it is deficient, it will not only cause pigment synthesis disorders and retinal diseases, but also change the tissue structure of ciliary muscle and lens, causing lens thickening, which is an important factor in the formation of myopia.

Iron is mainly distributed in the choroid and is the main element involved in the blood supply to the eye. Iron deficiency may cause insufficient blood supply to the eye and affect the supply of nutrients.

Vitamin A is a precursor substance for the synthesis of photoreceptor cells. If there is a lack of vitamin A, the eyes' photosensitivity will decrease, making them insensitive to light. This will increase the burden on the eyes when looking at things and will gradually lead to the occurrence of myopia.

Therefore, although fish eyes contain ingredients that are beneficial for relieving eye fatigue, unless you take extracts, if you want to dig out the eyes directly from the fish and eat them, the edible amount is far from enough. You may not be able to eat so many fish eyes in a childhood. It would be smarter to eat the liver directly!
