Diabetic patients see "black shadows" in their eyes and are worried about going blind

An elderly man in Wuhan often had "black shadows" in front of his eyes, but he did not seek medical attention until his vision became abnormal. It was discovered that he had vitreous hemorrhage in his right eye. The culprit turned out to be diabetes, which seemed to be unrelated.

Ms. Gao, 57, lives in Caidian, Wuhan. During the Qingming Festival, she went to her daughter's house to visit her grandson and suddenly found a large "black spot" on his face. However, the skin on his face was normal, so his family realized that there was something wrong with his eyes and took him to the Aier Eye Hospital affiliated to Wuhan University for treatment.

After examination, it was found that Ms. Gao's right eye vision could only see objects 20 cm in front of her. Li Xiangyun, deputy chief physician of the Department of Ophthalmology, learned that Ms. Gao had a six-year history of diabetes. Finally, Ms. Gao was diagnosed with type 2 diabetic retinopathy and vitreous hemorrhage in her right eye. Ms. Gao said that she usually lives alone and the "black shadow" in front of her eyes has appeared before, but she didn't care.

Li Xiangyun said that Ms. Gao had vitreous hemorrhage caused by diabetic retinopathy. The hemorrhage not only makes the refractive medium turbid, but also causes serious damage to the eye tissue. If not treated in time, it will lead to continuous vitreous hemorrhage and may cause loss of the patient's useful vision. After treatment, Ms. Gao's right eye vision has improved to 0.1, and she can see 0.3 with glasses.

"Almost every day, there are patients who come to the hospital for treatment due to diabetic retinopathy. Most patients believe that diabetes has nothing to do with blindness." Wu Jianhua, director of the hospital, suggested that diabetic patients should pay attention to and undergo screening for ophthalmic complications once they are diagnosed with diabetes to avoid delaying the disease.
