The vision loss was thought to be due to visual fatigue, but the "culprit" turned out to be a tumor

Hubei Daily News (Reporter Pei Nishang) The patient thought that his declining vision was due to eye fatigue caused by severe myopia, but when he went to the hospital for a check-up, he found that he had a tumor in his eye socket.

Ms. Xiao, who lives in Hanyang, is 58 years old. Four years ago, she felt that her right eye vision had declined, and she thought it was visual fatigue at first, so she kept delaying it. It was not until two years ago that her vision declined more and more obviously, and she went to the local hospital for examination at the urging of her family. The doctor told her that there was a tumor in her right eye socket, and the phenomenon of decreased vision was caused by this tumor. Because the tumor is located at the apex of the orbit, it has compressed the optic nerve, and the risk of surgery is relatively high. She consulted many hospitals, and the doctors all recommended that she observe. In recent months, the declining vision has seriously affected her daily life. After being introduced by someone, she came to the Aier Eye Hospital Affiliated to Wuhan University for treatment.

After examination, Ms. Xiao's left eye had a corrected visual acuity of 0.8, but her right eye only had an anterior index. Lu Xiulan, deputy chief physician of the eyelid orbital/eye plastic surgery department, carefully checked the examination report and told Ms. Xiao that although the tumor in her orbit was not large, it was located at the orbital apex and had compressed the optic nerve to the other side. The visual electrophysiological examination showed that the left eye was normal, but the optic nerve of the right eye was obviously damaged. Moreover, due to high myopia, the diameter of the eyeball had reached 34mm (normal is less than 24mm), almost filling the orbit.

Last week, after a comprehensive evaluation and full communication with the family, Dr. Tu Huifang, chief physician of the eyelid/orbital/ocular plastic surgery department, performed a right orbital tumor removal surgery on Ms. Xiao.

After more than an hour of delicate operation, Tu Huifang finally completely removed a tumor with a diameter of 1.4cm, and the pupil was normal after the operation. Tu Huifang said that during the operation, the optic nerve is a tissue that needs to be protected, and even a slight traction may cause the patient to go blind. In addition, the patient is highly myopic, and the eyeball is about half larger than normal, and the position is also very deep, near the orbital apex, which increases the difficulty of the operation.

"When vision deteriorates, the elderly may think it is caused by visual dysfunction or cataracts. Young and middle-aged people, on the other hand, think it is visual fatigue caused by using the eyes for too long. In addition, many people do not have enough knowledge about the disease, which leads to orbital tumors being ignored and misdiagnosed, missing the best time for treatment. Therefore, early diagnosis and regular treatment become important prerequisites for eliminating tumors and preserving vision." Tu Huifang reminded that if there is eye position deviation, eye movement disorder, protruding eyes, swollen eyes, headache and dizziness, unexplained reduction in visual range or decreased vision, you should go to a specialist hospital as soon as possible to rule out the risk of orbital tumors and conduct relevant imaging examinations if necessary.
