5 questions ophthalmologists are often asked about children's vision!

Among many organs, eyes are small in size, but their precision and demand for nutrients, oxygen, and blood are no less than any other organ. Parents have always attached great importance to their children's eyes and have never lacked awareness of protection, but they lack scientific methods.

Today we have compiled 5 questions that parents care about and ask frequently. Let’s take a look!

01Is myopia hereditary?

Bai Peng, a myopia prevention and control expert at Zhengzhou Aier Eye Hospital, said that myopia does have certain genetic factors, but the inheritance probability of different types of myopia is different, and myopia is the result of the combined effects of genetics and the environment. Scientific use of the eyes can delay the occurrence and development of myopia.

Generally speaking, if both parents are highly myopic, the probability of inheritance is relatively high. Such families should pay more attention to the vision development of their children. Because the problem caused by high myopia is not only unclear vision, but also various complications will occur with age, and severe cases may lead to blindness. If parents find that their children like to tilt their heads, lower their heads, squint or look at things at close range, they should seek medical attention in time.

If the child has pseudomyopia, it can be treated by changing lifestyle habits and taking medicine. If it develops into true myopia, glasses can be chosen for correction, and after the age of 18, glasses can be removed through myopia surgery.

02Will loving sweets affect your eyesight?

When the sugar in sweets is metabolized in the human body, a large amount of vitamin B1 is needed to help. Vitamin B1 has a protective effect on the optic nerve, and its content will affect the state of the optic nerve.

Not only sweets, but also if children are picky eaters and have unbalanced nutrition, it will also affect the development of their eyes.

03Is hyperopia more harmful to children than myopia?

Children are born with physiological hyperopia because their eyeballs are not yet fully developed. However, some children have abnormal hyperopia, which can lead to amblyopia and strabismus if not corrected in time.

For low-degree hyperopia, if the vision is normal or close to normal and there is no eye fatigue, no treatment is required. For patients with symptoms of visual fatigue but not accompanied by amblyopia, the main purpose is to eliminate the discomfort symptoms, and glasses can be fitted as appropriate.

For moderate to severe hyperopia, the children's near and far vision will decline to varying degrees, and most of them will be accompanied by amblyopia, and they need to receive systematic treatment in an ophthalmology hospital.

04Is it best to treat amblyopia in children before the age of 6?

Like many diseases, the key to treating amblyopia is "early". Generally, around 3 years old, 90% of a person's eyes are fully developed. There is a short period of development between 3 and 6 years old, and after 6 years old, they are basically fully developed. If you treat them at this time, the effect will be very poor. The harm of amblyopia is that many patients fail to detect and treat it early in childhood, and lose the opportunity to form normal vision and stereoscopic vision. 05 When should astigmatism be treated?

Generally speaking, astigmatism refers to regular astigmatism, which is mostly congenital and mainly caused by abnormal corneal curvature.

In normal infants and young children, the proportion of this type of astigmatism is very high. Normally, the incidence of severe astigmatism is very low, and severe astigmatism often occurs in combination with hyperopia and myopia. Generally speaking, for babies aged 3-5 years old, if the visual acuity test result is above 0.5 and the astigmatism of the dilated pupil refraction is less than 75 degrees, there is no need to take deliberate measures.
However, if the astigmatism measured by mydriasis refraction is greater than 100 degrees, it can easily cause eye fatigue and amblyopia in children. In this case, they need to wear glasses for correction according to the situation. This correction can delay the development of myopia.
