The baby is crying and the mother is worried

While taking care of the newborn baby, Ms. Zheng also had to worry about the baby's tearful eyes. Recalling her previous experience, she couldn't help but sigh.

Xiaoyu (pseudonym), who lives in Anhui, often shed tears when her eyes were open just a few days after she was born. As time went by, Xiaoyu's tears became more and more, accompanied by eye mucus. After searching online, Xiaoyu's mother, Ms. Zheng, suspected that the child might have a problem with the tear duct. After leaving the confinement period, Ms. Zheng anxiously took Xiaoyu to the local hospital for treatment, but because Xiaoyu was too young, the doctor suggested going home to observe for a few months. During these months of observation, as a new mother, Ms. Zheng was extremely tormented. On the one hand, she had to learn to take care of a newborn, and on the other hand, she had to worry about Xiaoyu's eyes.

Over the past six months, Ms. Zheng has taken Xiaoyu to several local hospitals for diagnosis and treatment. During this period, she underwent two tear duct probing operations, but the results were not satisfactory. The baby's eyes even began to ooze pus. Later, Ms. Zheng took Xiaoyu to the Aier Eye Hospital affiliated to Wuhan University, where she was diagnosed with congenital tear duct obstruction and neonatal dacryocystitis, requiring surgical treatment.

On November 5, Zhang Jiang, director of the tear duct/eye and nose department, performed a tear duct cannulation surgery on Xiaoyu. Since Xiaoyu had previously tried probing twice but both failed, the cannulation surgery was difficult and took nearly an hour. When she was discharged from the hospital yesterday, Xiaoyu finally stopped looking at her mother with tears in her eyes, and her mother no longer had to worry about those unprovoked tears.

Director Zhang Jiang reminds parents to pay attention if the baby has the following three conditions: the eyes are full of "tears" even when not crying; sticky yellow-white pus flows out of the inner corner of the eye when crying; there is a lot of eye mucus when getting up in the morning. Once the mother finds that the baby's eye mucus is yellow and there are a lot of tears when there is no discomfort, and in severe cases, the lacrimal sac is red, swollen and has lumps, the possibility of the baby suffering from tear duct disease should be considered.
