The fish floss you feed your children may be a fake! Just last month, we received a tip from a fan: the fish floss you feed your baby may be adulterated!

After the investigation and analysis by the researcher, it is very likely that the fish paste is adulterated ! The problem of children has always been the bottom line of Dad's evaluation. Now that the problem has been discovered, we decided to investigate it thoroughly!

We immediately purchased 20 popular fish floss products from the Internet and sent them to the official testing agency, including 15 cod floss products and 5 salmon floss products .

To better understand the test results, we also need to re-understand cod and salmon .

Traditionally, true cod refers to the Atlantic cod (Gadus morhua), Pacific cod (Gadus macrocephalus) and Greenland cod (Gadus ogac).

Atlantic cod is expensive in the market due to overfishing and declining production. This type of cod is not only high in protein and low in fat, but also rich in various nutrients and has relatively few bones. It is suitable for all kinds of people and is also the best choice for baby food.

Pacific cod is also called "big-head fish" or "big-head fishy" in China. The production in China's Yellow Sea and Bohai Sea is relatively high and the price is relatively cheap.

The production of Greenland cod is very small and its distribution area is relatively narrow. It is only produced in the waters around Greenland and is very rare on the market.

Also belonging to the family Gadidae in the order Gadformes is the yellowtail pollock (Theragra chalcogramma), which is probably more familiar to everyone because of its other name: pollack.

Although this fish has good nutritional value, its price is much different from that of Atlantic cod. Since the two have a similar taste, they are often used as substitutes.

Salmon generally refers to Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar). Common fakes include rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss) and salmon (Oncorhynchus keta). These two types of fish are relatively cheap, and their meat is orange with white stripes, so it is difficult to distinguish them from real salmon with the naked eye.

Let me highlight the key points here. The common true cod refers to Atlantic cod (Gadus morhua) and Pacific cod (Gadus macrocephalus), and the true salmon refers to Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar).

Let’s take a look at the test results. Among the 20 fish floss samples, only 6 samples were real cod/salmon, and the adulteration rate was as high as 70%!

Based on the above, the researcher speculated that merchants would use yellowtail haddock to impersonate real cod, and rainbow trout and salmon to impersonate salmon. Unexpectedly, we still overestimated the bottom line of some merchants!

Among the codfish floss, the actual test results of No. 3, No. 6, No. 9, No. 10 and No. 14 were yellowtail haddock ; among the salmon floss, the actual test results of No. 16 and No. 20 were salmon , and No. 18 was rainbow trout .

As for the remaining samples, some of the fish were adulterated that we had never even heard of… These merchants are really "taking a different approach", I admire them!

The one that left us speechless was sample No. 15. The ingredient list said it contained 80% fresh cod meat, but no animal species were detected ...

It's outrageous. It's outrageous to the extreme!

We poured sample No. 15 onto our hands and took a closer look. There was no meat fiber at all. It smelled like fish mixed with a bit of oil, like feed...

Sample No. 17 was sold at a price as high as 124 yuan/100g, which is twice as expensive as the real salmon floss No. 19. They actually used chicken to impersonate salmon. Doesn’t the merchant have a guilty conscience?

At the end of the article, as usual, I should give you some "purchase suggestions", but this time the review was not as we wished.

Judging from the unit price, the prices of these fish floss products vary greatly. Real fish floss is not necessarily expensive, and expensive ones are not necessarily real.

Secondly, the smell, color and appearance are also irregular. It is easy for merchants to fake, but it is very difficult for consumers to distinguish the authenticity!

If you really want to add fish paste to your baby's complementary food, the relatively safe way is to make it at home . The method is also very simple. Our researcher sister has tested it for you:

Step 1 : Steam the fish until cooked;

Step 2 : Put the steamed fish into a sealed bag and crush it with a rolling pin;

Step 3 : Use a non-stick pan to stir-fry over low heat until it becomes fish floss. The dryness or wetness of the fish floss can be controlled according to your preference. The drier it is, the longer it can be stored.

Note : Homemade fish floss has a relatively high moisture content and does not contain any preservatives. If it cannot be eaten within two or three days, it is recommended to be packaged and frozen.
