Hui Shiyang, chief ophthalmologist at the Affiliated Hospital of Liaoning University of Traditional Chinese Medicine, pointed out that myopia is sometimes caused by genetic factors, but more often it is acquired. Bad eye habits can cause myopia, especially long-term close-up use of the eyes, such as excessive use of mobile phones and computers, and improper reading posture. In addition, an unreasonable diet and lack of outdoor exercise can also lead to myopia.

Eyes are windows to the soul, and good vision is essential for children's healthy growth. Dr. Hui Shiyang said that myopia prevention and control is not a trivial matter. If it is not well prevented, children will go from myopia to high myopia, and then may become pathological myopia. Pathological myopia can cause blindness and disability.

"Under the guidance of the idea of ​​'preventing disease before it occurs', using TCM diagnosis and treatment techniques to intervene in different stages of myopia can prevent the occurrence of myopia, control the development of myopia, and prevent and treat complications caused by pathological myopia." Dr. Hui Shiyang said that TCM methods for improving vision generally fall into two categories: internal treatment and external treatment. Internal treatment can be carried out under the guidance of a professional TCM physician, based on a reasonable daily diet, by selecting some Chinese medicines that are both medicinal and edible for dietary adjustment; external treatment includes acupoint massage, acupuncture, auricular therapy, etc., which can improve local blood circulation in the eyes, relieve visual fatigue, and prevent and control myopia.

"Stimulating the acupoints around the eyes can dredge the meridian circulation of the eyes." Dr. Hui Shiyang recommends that you can press the Zanzhu, Jingming, Sibai, Taiyang, Fengchi and other acupoints on a daily basis, 3 to 5 acupoints each time, massage each acupoint for 1 minute, 3 to 4 times a day. When massaging the acupoints, you must be accurate, steady, and persistent, and the degree of soreness and swelling is the limit.

How to prevent and control myopia in children and adolescents? Dr. Hui Shiyang suggested that we should maintain the correct reading and writing posture on a daily basis, and achieve the "three ones", that is, the distance between the eyes and the book is about one foot, the distance between the chest and the table is about one fist, and the distance between the fingers holding the pen and the tip of the pen is about one inch; avoid lying down to read, leaning over the desk to read with your head tilted, and other bad habits; remember the "20-20-20" formula, after watching the screen for 20 minutes, you should look up and look 20 feet away, that is, 6 meters away for more than 20 seconds. In terms of diet, you should "differentiate the diet" and eat more foods that are both medicinal and edible, such as mulberries, lotus seeds, sheep liver, black beans, walnut kernels, carrots, etc. Work and rest should be regular, and ensure adequate sleep. Primary school students should sleep 10 hours a day, junior high school students should sleep 9 hours, and high school students should sleep 8 hours. Avoid staying up late, which will hurt the liver and eyes.
