Dry lips, thirst, cough without phlegm...When autumn dryness comes knocking on your door, you might as well eat more pears!

Autumn is a season of clear and cool weather with a dry climate. People experience symptoms such as dry throat and nose, dry lips and thirst, cough without phlegm, and dry skin, which is called "autumn dryness". Pears are fresh, juicy, sweet and sour, and are very effective in improving autumn dryness.

Pear, also known as Kuaiguo and Yuru, is also known as "the ancestor of all fruits" and "natural mineral water". According to Chinese medicine, pear is sweet, slightly sour and cool in nature. It belongs to the lung and stomach meridians, and has the functions of moistening the lungs and resolving phlegm, clearing heat and promoting body fluid. It is mainly used for symptoms of heat disease, body fluid damage, irritability and thirst, dry cough due to lung dryness, dry throat and tongue, or dry stool. "Suixiju Diet" says that it "moistens the lungs, clears the stomach, cools the heart, clears heat and calms the wind, resolves phlegm and cough, nourishes yin and moistens dryness, disperses knots and clears the intestines, eliminates carbuncle, stops thirst, and resolves various toxins. It treats stroke, aphasia, phlegm heat, shock, heatstroke and other diseases. It is squeezed and taken as juice, named Tiansheng Ganlu Drink". "Compendium of Materia Medica" says that it "moistens the lungs and cools the heart, eliminates phlegm and reduces fire, and resolves sores and alcohol poisoning".

Eating raw pears can significantly relieve the symptoms of dry throat, itching, pain, hoarseness, constipation, and red urine in patients with upper respiratory tract infection. Squeeze pears into pear juice, or add panda dahai, winter melon seeds, and a little rock sugar, and boil it to drink. It has the effect of moistening the larynx and replenishing body fluids for those with dry weather, yin deficiency and hyperactivity of fire, itchy and dry throat, and hoarse voice. Cook pears, such as steaming pears with rock sugar, which can nourish yin and moisten the lungs, relieve cough and eliminate phlegm. Pear paste candy made from pears and honey has a significant effect on patients with lung heat and long-term cough.

Modern research shows that in addition to 85% water, every 100 grams of pear (referring to the pulp) also contains a variety of nutrients that are indispensable to the human body, such as protein, fat, carbohydrates, minerals such as calcium, phosphorus, iron, multiple vitamins and organic acids such as citric acid and malic acid. Pear pulp contains glycosides and tannic acid, which have the effects of moistening the lungs, relieving coughs, reducing phlegm, and nourishing blood. Pears can relieve symptoms and promote recovery of dry throat, sore throat, hoarseness, thick phlegm, constipation, and red urine caused by tuberculosis, upper respiratory tract infection, and acute and chronic tracheitis. Pears have antihypertensive and sedative effects. People with hypertension and heart disease with hyperactivity of liver yang or liver fire inflammation can reduce blood pressure, dizziness, vertigo, palpitations, etc. by eating pears regularly. The polyphenolic bioactive substances contained in pears have the effect of promoting the body to excrete carcinogens such as polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons and their metabolites. Eating a pear or drinking a glass of pear juice after eating pickled vegetables and barbecued foods that are prone to produce carcinogens is beneficial to resist the invasion of toxic substances. Pears can promote gastric acid secretion, protect the liver, aid digestion and increase appetite. Patients with hepatitis and cirrhosis can eat pears regularly to increase their appetite and improve their spirits.

Although pears are good fruits, they are not suitable for all people. Pears have a diuretic effect. People who urinate frequently at night should eat less pears before going to bed. People with blood deficiency, fear of cold, diarrhea, and cold hands and feet should not eat too many pears, and it is best to cook them before eating to prevent the symptoms of cold and dampness from worsening. Pears are high in sugar, so diabetics should be cautious. Patients with chronic enteritis and cold stomach should not eat raw pears. Pears contain more fruit acid, so people with high stomach acid should not eat too many. Drinking hot water or eating greasy food when eating pears can cause diarrhea. Pears contain more fruit acid, so they should not be used with alkaline drugs, such as aminophylline, baking soda, etc. Pears should not be eaten with crabs to prevent diarrhea.
