Is sun-tanned skin healthier?

Is sun-tanned skin healthier?

Not really

Many people believe that a tan is a sign of health, strength, and vitality, but objectively speaking, this view is not correct.

Tanned skin is actually a self-protective reaction of the skin after exposure to UV rays, rather than a sign of health. When the skin is exposed to UV rays, the body produces more melanin (or redistributes existing melanin) to protect against further damage from UV rays, so the skin becomes darker. However, this change does not mean that the skin is getting healthier, but rather that the skin is damaged.

It is important to know that UV exposure is one of the main causes of skin damage. Long-term (especially year-round) exposure to UV rays can increase signs of skin aging, such as wrinkles, sagging, and pigmentation. In addition, UV rays can directly damage the DNA of skin cells, leading to cell mutations and increasing the likelihood of skin cancer.

Contrary to what some people believe, a healthy skin tone is even, without unusual spots or dryness and sensitivity from excessive sun exposure. Tanning (including bronze skin) is a temporary response to UV damage and is not a sign of unhealthy skin.

Therefore, the pursuit of bronze skin is not only unhelpful, but may have a negative impact on health. Proper sun protection and skin care are the real way to keep your skin healthy.

To keep your skin healthy, avoid excessive or prolonged sun exposure. When going out, take appropriate sun protection measures, such as applying sunscreen, wearing protective clothing and hats.
