In order to improve the current status of anemia management in China, enhance the whole society's attention to anemia, improve the awareness of standardized diagnosis and treatment of anemia-related diseases, attach importance to the prevention and treatment of anemia screening, standardize clinical rational blood use, and alleviate the shortage of medical resources, the National Health Commission's Medical and Health Science and Technology Development Research Center, in conjunction with the Bethune Public Welfare Foundation, the Chinese Medical Journal of the Chinese Medical Association, and authoritative experts from various disciplines of the Chinese Medical Association, advocate that August 18 of each year be established as "China Anemia Day." August 18 this year is the fourth China Anemia Day. The China National Health Association has joined hands with dozens of domestic hospitals to launch a large-scale public welfare activity called "Caring for anemia patients, what should I do if I encounter anemia?" Iron deficiency and iron-deficiency anaemia are major health problems affecting approximately 2 billion people worldwide. What causes iron deficiency? Which groups of people are prone to iron deficiency? Iron is one of the essential trace elements for the human body and plays an important role in the human body. However, iron deficiency has been bothering us for a long time. Iron deficiency is the only nutritional deficiency in developed countries! According to WHO statistics, as much as 80% of the world's population suffers from iron deficiency. In the UK, 21% of female adolescents aged 11-18 and 18% of women aged 16-64 are iron deficient. In France, 29% of children under 2 are iron deficient. In the United States, 9%-11% of non-pregnant women aged 16-49 are iron deficient. The results of the fourth nutrition survey in my country show that the prevalence of anemia among Chinese residents is 20.1%, half of whom are iron-deficiency anemia. There are many reasons for this situation: 1. Increased iron demand (or) active hematopoiesis: Infants, preschoolers, and adolescents grow and develop rapidly. The iron demand increases in mid- and late-pregnancy and breastfeeding women. 2. Iron intake or absorption disorders: Vegetarians or vegan diets, unbalanced diets or eating disorders, such as people who lose weight or exercise. In addition, people aged > 65 years, people with gastrointestinal/other diseases/surgery-induced absorption disorders, and people with acute or chronic inflammation are also prone to iron deficiency. 3. Excessive iron loss: people with chronic blood loss, menorrhagia, acute blood loss, multiple blood donations, bleeding diseases and chronic renal failure. What are the main dangers of anemia? Why is aggressive treatment necessary? The 2016 Global Burden of Disease Study published in The Lancet showed that iron deficiency and iron-deficiency anaemia are the fifth most common disease in the world (with a population of up to 1.24 billion people) and the fourth leading cause of years of life lost due to disability. Its common symptoms are not only dizziness, fatigue, shortness of breath, inattention, etc., but also adverse effects on other systems of the patient, including increased risk of cognitive impairment, increased risk of cardiovascular disease, increased risk of perioperative death, premature birth, and risk of depression in pregnant women. The prevention and treatment of iron deficiency anemia has become an important public health issue. Correcting iron deficiency anemia as soon as possible is crucial to the patient's prognosis and recovery outcome. Clinicians should pay attention to the high incidence of iron deficiency anemia while paying attention to major diseases, tumors and other diseases. A more efficient treatment plan is an urgent clinical need.
