Does a new car need to be run-in? Why should a new car be run-in?

Many people say that new cars need to be run-in after buying them. In fact, whether a car is run-in or not, it generally does not affect the normal use of the car. The car will be fully run-in before leaving the factory. Of course, there is no harm in running it in again during later use.

Does a new car need to be run-in?

New cars must go through a running-in period. I believe this statement is very common in normal times. The specific reason is that when a new car starts running, the engine will grind off some iron filings, so the engine must be driven slowly to give it an adaptation process to prevent damage to the engine. In fact, for early engines, both the materials used and the production processes are somewhat different from now, so it is necessary to run in. However, this is not necessary for current engines. The improvement of materials and processes will not produce any iron filings, and even if there are any, they will be filtered out through the oil filter. The engine will also be fully run-in before leaving the factory. Of course, there is no harm in running it in again during later use, but there is no need to worry about the engine speed being occasionally too high.

Why do new cars need to be run-in?

Mechanical things have errors in machining accuracy, and each friction surface will not achieve the best finish. This is an unchangeable fact, and we do not need the surface of the parts to achieve a perfect finish. It is enough as long as the two friction surfaces can form the best match with each other. The running-in period is to allow sufficient contact movement between the friction parts so that the contact surfaces can naturally form the best match. As for the manufacturer's cold running-in, it is actually a misunderstanding. After the engine is assembled, it needs to be tested for any problems. At this time, it needs to be driven by external force just to see if it can run well. Some machines will also be sampled to check their operating stability, but these works are definitely not done for running-in. The intensity and time of these tests do not meet the requirements of running-in. The user manuals of various manufacturers have not been found to clearly inform users that running-in is not required.

What is new car running-in?

The automobile running-in period refers to the initial driving stage of a new car or one after major repairs, which is generally 1,000-2,000 kilometers. This is the basic mileage to ensure that the parts are fully in contact, rubbed, adapted, and finalized. During this period, the ability of the various parts of the car to adapt to the environment can be adjusted and improved, and the protrusions on the parts can be worn off. The quality of the automobile running-in will have an important impact on the life, safety, and economy of the car.

Cars are a means of transportation and are not that fragile. As long as the car is within the tolerance range, high-intensity driving is still no problem. Moreover, not only for new cars, for old cars that are not too old, occasionally increasing the speed can also remove carbon deposits in the cylinder, which is also good for the engine. The key point is that as long as it is within a reasonable range, no matter how you operate the car, you still need to maintain and service the car on time.
