What is the story behind Laba porridge?

The eighth day of the twelfth lunar month is a festival celebrated by most Chinese people. There are many versions of the story about Laba Festival. The mainstream legend is that the Indian Buddha Sakyamuni attained enlightenment on the eighth day of the twelfth lunar month, so the eighth day of the twelfth lunar month became the anniversary of Sakyamuni's enlightenment. There are also some sayings that eating porridge made from grains on Laba Festival is to pray for good weather and good harvests in the coming year. I personally tend to the first saying, because Laba porridge is a pure vegetarian food, which is most suitable for Buddhists to eat and use in activities to worship Sakyamuni Buddha.

In my country, the eighth day of the twelfth lunar month is generally considered to be the beginning of the Spring Festival. Cooking Laba porridge to worship Buddha is the beginning of the Spring Festival. How to cook Laba porridge to make it delicious? According to my experience, you should first select a variety of finished grains such as beans, rice, and grains. Beans that are difficult to cook should be soaked in water in advance, and then add enough water to cook the porridge at one time. Do not add water in the middle. In this way, the porridge will be concentrated and taste better. There is no regulation on the raw material formula of Laba porridge. You can add or subtract according to your own preferences.

The specific method of making Laba porridge

Ingredients:

Rice, glutinous rice, millet, coix seed, oats, black rice, red beans, Chinese yam, red dates, black wolfberry, chestnut, pistachio, lily, hazelnut.

practice:

1. Wash glutinous rice, millet, black rice and coix seed, and soak them in clean water for about 3 hours.

2. Wash the red beans and Chinese yam and soak them in clean water for about 3 hours.

3. Wash the jujube and cut it into cubes. Wash the lily and soak it in clean water for half an hour.

4. Cut the chestnuts into shaped pieces, put them in the microwave for 1 minute, lift the cut edges up, remove the inner and outer skins, and dice them into chestnut pieces for later use.

5. Peel and flesh the pistachios, crack the hard shells of the hazelnuts, and remove the cores for later use.

6. Put all the ingredients into the electric pressure cooker, add 4 times the amount of water, press the meat cooking button, and the porridge will be ready in about an hour. The meat cooking process takes a long time, which can fully cook various beans and nuts, so that the ingredients will not be heated unevenly and the taste will not be sticky.

7. After the porridge is cooked, you can add rock sugar and black wolfberry after opening the lid, mix well and you can eat it. Black wolfberry should be added last. If you cook it with the porridge in advance, the heat-sensitive anthocyanins will be destroyed.
