The whole process of colposcopy

I believe everyone has heard of colposcopy. It is a new item during vaginal examination. Through this examination, it can be detected whether a woman suffers from Trichomonas vaginitis and some other symptoms. Although this term is often heard, many people are still not very clear about the process of colposcopy. So what is the process of colposcopy? What are the common operating steps?

What is a colposcopy?

Colposcopy is an instrument for diagnosing gynecological diseases. Using an optical microscope that magnifies the cervical or vaginal epithelial tissue, combined with the functions of light and PS filters, the cervix and vagina can be clearly examined, allowing doctors to observe changes in cervical epithelial cells and blood vessels to confirm whether there is abnormal metaplasia and judge the severity of the disease. It magnifies the area to be observed by about 40 times, so as to detect subtle changes that are invisible to the human eye, which is what we often call suspected areas.

Colposcopy process

(1) Check the private parts and vagina for any diseases.

(2) The speculum is gently inserted into the vagina to fully expose the cervix, vagina, and vaginal vault.

(3) Visually inspect the shape, size, color, and presence of erosion, leukoplakia, growths, and characteristics of secretions of the cervix.

(4) Use the ball to rub the surface of the cervix and remove mucus and secretions. Avoid rubbing too hard to prevent bleeding.

(5) Adjust the lens focus (20-30cm), use white light to check the blood vessels on the surface of the cervix, wet the surface of the cervix with 5% glacial acetic acid cotton for about 30 seconds to remove mucus, wait for one minute and then observe for at least 2-3 minutes.

(6) Colposcopy strongly recommends careful and dynamic observation of the four quadrants of the cervix (divided in a clockwise direction with the external cervical os as the center): additional identification of the location of the squamocolumnar junction (SCJ); determination of the extent of the transition zone (TZ); identification of any lesions within the transition zone; observation of the changes between the epithelial cells and blood vessels in the abnormal transition zone to determine the characteristics of the lesions; further observation of the characteristics of the blood vessels under a green filter; and interpretation of the meaning of the images heard during colposcopy according to the diagnostic criteria.
