Is Amaryllis cold-resistant? How does Amaryllis survive the winter?

Amaryllis is a common flower in life. It is deeply loved by people because of its bright flowers and strong fragrance. So is Amaryllis cold-resistant? How can Amaryllis survive the winter? The following editor will explain them one by one, hoping to help you.

Is Amaryllis cold-resistant?

Amaryllis generally enters dormancy when the temperature is low. Due to the temperature difference, in winter, regardless of whether there is a large amount of leaf fall, as long as the growth stops completely, it is dormant. If the leaves do not fall and the growth stops, it is evergreen dormancy (occurs when the temperature is continuously above 15 degrees), while if the leaves fall in large numbers and only the bulbs are left, it is deciduous dormancy (occurs when the temperature is between 0 and 10 degrees).

How to Overwinter Amaryllis

For potted amaryllis in the north, all bulbs and leaves should be cut off in late autumn.

Winters in the north are very cold. In order to reduce the consumption of Amaryllis bulbs and allow it to use all its nutrients to nourish the bulbs, we need to cut off all the bulbs and leaves of Amaryllis in late autumn and early winter, leaving only the bulbs to overwinter.

For potted amaryllis in the south, wait until the leaves turn yellow before pruning

Compared with the north, the south is much warmer and more humid, even in winter. At this time, we don't need to rush to prune the leaves of Amaryllis. Wait until the nutrients in the leaves are consumed and the leaves have emitted their last bit of light and heat. When the leaves turn yellow, we can cut off the bulbs and leaves.

How to nourish bulbs

The nourishment of the bulbs is mainly reflected in watering and fertilizing. The bulbs must not be watered after pruning, let alone fertilized. Both watering and fertilizing should be done before pruning. We used potassium dihydrogen phosphate and three-element balanced compound fertilizer once a month before pruning, and the reporter diluted them more than 1,000 times with water. When applying fertilizer, do not apply it directly to the bulbs, and keep it away from the roots of Amaryllis. Amaryllis must not be watered in winter, but you can add some water to the pot soil before storing the bulbs to keep the soil moist.
