Will hcg levels increase in ectopic pregnancy?

It takes a lot of physical and mental effort for a pregnant mother to create a new life. During the creation process, she is not only worried about various problems with the fetus, but also has to pay attention to her own body. In the early stages of pregnancy, pregnant women can test for pregnancy through hCG. So, will hCG increase in ectopic pregnancy?

Will hCG increase in ectopic pregnancy?

The human chorionic gonadotropin (commonly known as hCG) assay is currently the most advanced pregnancy test. The common test methods are blood hCG assay and urine hCG assay. This test determines whether a woman is pregnant by checking the presence of β-subunits in the blood and urine. Blood can be drawn for hCG testing 8-10 days after intercourse, which is earlier than the 35 days that the general early pregnancy test paper detects in urine. Therefore, pregnancy testing through blood hCG can take corresponding preventive measures for pregnancy earlier. So, will hCG increase in ectopic pregnancy?

In case of ectopic pregnancy, hCG will rise, but the growth rate will be relatively slow. For ectopic pregnancy, because the muscle layer of both fallopian tubes is thin and the blood supply is poor, the hCG secretion amount is very low. The daily increase is less. The increase is less than 50% in 48 hours (but for some people, the initial hCG increase is normal). For example, if it is 10 today, 15 tomorrow, and 17 the next day, then the hCG value is abnormal. If hCG is not enough, progesterone levels can be used as a diagnostic tool. It is medically recognized that patients with ectopic pregnancy have low blood progesterone levels, so the progesterone level can be used as one of the bases for early diagnosis. The critical point of progesterone value is 63nmol/L. The clinical symptoms of ectopic pregnancy include amenorrhea, abdominal pain, vaginal bleeding, etc. If such abnormal conditions occur, you should go to the hospital outpatient clinic immediately to find out the cause.

How to do blood hCG test

The hCG test is done by extracting venous blood. Because the content of hCG is not affected by meals, there is no need to be on an empty stomach or hold your urine. It is recommended to choose to check in the morning. At present, the more common measurement methods in clinical medicine are the following three: enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) screening method, chocolate enzyme immunoassay method, and immunocolloidal gold method. This method has good sensitivity, low cost and fast testing, and is widely used in clinical medicine.

When you go to the hospital for a check-up, you can bring some books to pass the time waiting in a long line. Your clothes should be loose. If you are wearing too much or too tight, it is best to slip off the sleeve on the side where blood tests are required to be done to prevent your clothes from compressing your blood vessels or causing some inconvenience if the time is too long.

When drawing blood for testing, you should clench your fists tightly. When the needle enters the blood vessel, you can relax your fists. At this time, you should keep silent and calm your mind. If you are nervous about the venipuncture blood test or feel nauseous or dizzy at the sight of blood, you can close your eyes or twist your head. After the blood test is completed, immediately use a sterile cotton swab or other sterile blood-activating object to clamp the puncture site, or bend your arm to hold the cotton swab to prevent blood leakage. From now on, the blood test arm should be kept clean as much as possible within 24 hours.
