Research on Female Masturbation Addiction

The topic of female masturbation has always been very private. Most men want to know whether women also have the behavior of masturbation, or even how many times a week or a month they masturbate. After all, women are more tactful than men, and many private matters are too embarrassing to be made public. The following is the result of the investigation by sex biologists, which you can follow:

The United Kingdom conducted a national health and behavior survey via the Internet, analyzing and evaluating the sexual life of 2,523 women aged 18-92 in the past 90 days, including the proportion of women of different ages who engaged in solo and partner sexual activities, and evaluating their frequency of masturbation, vaginal sex, and anal sex in the past year.

Survey data shows that women in the UK today engage in a variety of sexual activities both alone and with partners, but sex is less common among older people. Vaginal intercourse is still the most common sexual activity among women, masturbation and oral sex are also frequently performed, and very few women report anal intercourse, but this is more common in young women who are in a relationship. Here we only introduce in detail the investigation report related to masturbation

1. The age group of people who masturbate independently is relatively

More than half of women aged 18-49 have masturbated in the past 90 days, with an average of 61.4%. The highest proportion is among those aged 25-29, and the proportion of masturbation among single women with dated relationships is as high as 94.1%. This proportion gradually decreases with age. However, women aged 60-69 who were in a relationship were significantly less likely to report recent independent masturbation than those who were not in a relationship (down to 38.1%-28.4%). Among women aged 60-69, across all relationship and age groups, approximately one-third reported recent masturbation. Among women over 70 who are in a relationship but not living together, more than half report masturbating independently.

2. Frequency of independent masturbation

The proportion of women aged 18 to 39 who reported relatively frequent solo masturbation (few to more times per month) rose to 48%, but the frequency of masturbation declined across age groups.

Therefore, masturbation is not only not a monopoly of men, but also the proportion and frequency of participation are not much different from that of men. The book "Sexology" also mentioned a lot of research on female masturbation (the following is an excerpt from the book):

In Kinsey's survey, 92% of men and 58% of women reached orgasm through masturbation many times in their lives, with the highest proportion of women reaching 62%. Before the age of 45, the number of women masturbating continued to increase. 54% of women started masturbating at the age of 15, and only 14% started this activity after the age of 20.

As for the frequency of masturbation among women, single women aged 18-24 masturbate 21 times a year, while in Hunter's survey, it was 37 times a year. --- In a Cosmopolitan magazine survey, the frequency was higher: 35% of women masturbated rarely, 37% more than once a month, 25% more than once a week, and 3% did it every day. This frequency is consistent across ages (up to 55 years old) and does not decrease with age.

So what is the research data on similar masturbation among women? Based on my limited professional knowledge and information, I don’t know yet. Just in the book "Chinese Women's Emotions and Sexuality" written by sex educator Professor Li Yinhe, we can see the different views and practices of women on masturbation: "From the perspective of personal behavior, it can be divided into never doing it, sometimes doing it, and often doing it; from the perspective of mentality, it can be divided into two categories: guilt and no guilt."

As a woman, I personally think that masturbation is a free behavior that belongs entirely to oneself and has nothing to do with others, society, or morality. Whether masturbation affects health depends on each person's understanding of the "quantity" of their own experience, just like we instinctively understand our own appetite and our own sleep needs. If it is determined that a small number of people masturbate too much and affect their health, I think it is not the masturbation behavior itself, but the depression caused by the guilt of masturbation that intensifies masturbation and polarization.

Then why has masturbation been elevated to the level of "illegal, not a crime" in terms of social morality, and to the level of "harmful, not harmful" that has been debated endlessly in medical circles for generations? I have always been confused about this matter, until I read the article "Foucault and Sexuality" written by Professor Li Yinhe, and then I didn't care anymore! (The following are selected references):

"There is no scientific evidence that masturbation is harmful to humans. We can at least say that it is the only pleasure that is harmless to humans. So why should it be banned for such a long time?" In Foucault's view, the purpose of power depends on control and the pleasure that control produces. ---The prohibition and persecution of masturbation has not only become a way for the powerful to control people, but also brought the power the pleasure of ruling. ----The pleasure of the controlled party comes from the fact that being supervised and restrained by power can make things more exciting in themselves---, and prohibited behaviors seem more exciting.
