Is the pelvic floor muscle exam painful?

During the delivery process, the mother's pelvic floor muscles will be affected to a certain extent, and the pelvic floor muscles need to be examined after delivery. Because the pelvic floor muscles are located in a special position, many women are worried about experiencing severe pain before the examination. After all, if it is a normal birth, they have just experienced severe labor pain. So, is a pelvic floor muscle exam painful? Let’s take a look below.

Generally, a pelvic floor muscle examination should be done 42 days after delivery. The pelvic floor muscle examination is a little painful, but it is not unbearable. It is best for pregnant mothers to go to a regular hospital to do it. Generally, there will be no problem. It is just to check the recovery of muscle tissue. The body is the most important thing. If rehabilitation training is needed, it should be done so that the body can recover quickly after childbirth.

Pregnant mothers do not need to be too nervous. If they are too nervous during the examination, it will still cause slight discomfort, so they should relax their minds during the examination, have a regular daily routine, do not stay up late frequently, cooperate with the doctor's treatment, and listen to the doctor's advice. Pregnant mothers can also do some exercises at home to restore the pelvic floor muscles, so as to speed up the recovery.

What are the pelvic floor muscle function assessments?

1. Pelvic floor muscle function assessment: mainly includes pelvic floor muscle strength and vaginal contraction pressure. Pelvic floor muscle strength mainly assesses the intensity of muscle contraction, the ability to resist resistance, the duration and fatigue of muscle contraction, symmetry, repeated contraction ability and the number of rapid contractions. Vaginal contraction pressure indicates the comprehensive muscle strength level of the superficial and deep vaginal muscle layers.

2. Rectal examination: used to evaluate whether the anal sphincter is damaged in the resting state and the spontaneous contraction state.

Precautions

Unsuitable people: Pregnant women.

Taboos before examination: The examination should be done 3-7 days after the menstruation is over. Requirements during inspection: The inspector should be relaxed and the person being inspected needs to cooperate by making corresponding actions. During the examination, women will undergo medical history inquiry, routine examination and pelvic floor muscle function assessment about 6 weeks after delivery. The doctor should carefully inquire about the medical history, including whether there are concurrent high-risk factors such as chronic constipation, chronic cough, diabetes, etc. that may easily lead to PFD. The normal value examination showed no wounds, no redness, swelling, nodules, tenderness or tenderness, the pelvic floor muscles were normal, and the anal sphincter was either damaged or not.

For pelvic floor muscle strength assessment, normal assessment results should be between levels 3-5. However, in most cases, the muscle strength of new mothers is only level 0-2, and appropriate rehabilitation is required. If a woman experiences pelvic floor relaxation after childbirth, the doctor will provide her with different treatment options based on the location and condition of the pelvic floor damage.
