Is hydronephrosis serious in women?

If female friends are diagnosed with hydronephrosis, it will affect their various organs and tissues, and even their menstruation will become abnormal. Various lesions in the urinary system and its adjacent areas may cause urinary flow obstruction and eventually lead to hydronephrosis. Due to differences in the primary cause, location and degree of obstruction, the clinical manifestations and course of hydronephrosis are not consistent in different patients. Congenital lesions, such as stenosis of the ureteropelvic junction, hydronephrosis caused by ectopic blood vessels or fibrous bundles compressing the ureter at the lower pole of the kidney, develop relatively slowly and may be asymptomatic for a long time. An abdominal mass only appears when the tumor reaches a certain size.

Secondary hydronephrosis caused by stones, tumors, inflammation and tuberculosis in various parts of the urinary system has mainly primary symptoms and signs, and rarely shows signs of hydronephrosis. It is often discovered only when complete obstruction occurs suddenly, such as renal colic when stones are impacted in the kidneys and ureters. When secondary hydronephrosis is complicated by infection, it often manifests as an aggravation of the symptoms of the primary disease.

Hydronephrosis sometimes occurs intermittently, which is called intermittent hydronephrosis. During an attack, there is severe colic in the affected side of the abdomen, nausea, vomiting, and decreased urine volume; after several hours or longer, the pain disappears and a large amount of urine is excreted. This situation is more common in ureteral obstruction.

Hydronephrosis caused by long-term obstruction will eventually lead to a gradual decline in renal function. Anuria may occur when bilateral kidneys or a single kidney is completely obstructed, leading to renal failure.

It should be mentioned that mild hydronephrosis and hydroureterosis often occur during normal pregnancy. In addition to the compression of the ureter by the pregnant uterus, it is also caused by the relaxation of the renal pelvic ureteral muscles due to the secretion of progesterone during pregnancy. This type of hydronephrosis is a physiological condition that almost always occurs on the right side due to anatomical relationships.
