Breast cancer recurrence rate after resection

Breast cancer recurrence rate after resection

Breast cancer is a very common physical disease for many people. It usually occurs in women, and a small number of men also suffer from breast cancer. The chance of recurrence after breast cancer is removed through surgery is also very high. Generally, the chance of recurrence is highest within 4-5 years after surgery, so regular inspections and prevention are required.

Is there a high chance of breast cancer recurring after surgery?

The 5 years after breast cancer surgery is a high-risk period for recurrence, especially the 1-2 years after surgery. Once breast cancer recurs or metastasizes, the difficulty of treatment will increase and it is very likely to directly threaten the patient's life. There are three forms of postoperative recurrence of breast cancer, including local recurrence, new recurrence on the other side, and distant metastasis.

Breast cancer is a relatively common malignant tumor in women, but it is not exclusive to women. A very small number of men may also have breast cancer. The main treatment for breast cancer is a comprehensive treatment plan with radical surgery as the main approach.

Generally, there is still a chance of recurrence after resection, but the specific chance of recurrence cannot be determined. We can only wait and see during treatment. It also depends on the pathological stage of breast cancer and subsequent treatment. Generally, early and mid-stage breast cancer that can be cured by surgery has a relatively low chance of recurrence, and the 5-year survival rate can reach over 70%. If palliative surgery is performed for advanced breast cancer, the chance of local recurrence is still relatively high, and the patient may only survive for 1-2 years. However, do not give up treatment. Continue to watch and treat the condition. Radiotherapy, chemotherapy, endocrine therapy, and targeted drugs can be used.

As a systemic tumor, breast cancer is definitely facing the possibility of local recurrence and distant metastasis. The risk of recurrence and metastasis is currently determined by two major factors. One is clinical factors. The larger the primary tumor before treatment and the more lymph node metastases, the higher the possibility of metastasis. Another type of factor is the biological characteristics provided by the corresponding pathology. The risk of recurrence and metastasis of patients with triple-negative breast cancer is significantly increased, and the histological pathological type grade is relatively high, especially for patients with histological grade three breast cancer. The risk of recurrence and metastasis will also be significantly increased.
