Can women get pregnant with high testosterone?

When it comes to testosterone, everyone must think that it is only found in men's bodies, because women do not have testicles and therefore do not have testosterone. In fact, women also have testosterone in their bodies, but it is much less than in men. If the testosterone level in the body is too low or too high, it is not easy for women to get pregnant, so it is very necessary to check the testosterone level before pregnancy. So, can women get pregnant with high testosterone levels?

Does high testosterone affect pregnancy in women?

The physiological effects of testosterone include affecting embryonic development, stimulating genital growth and the appearance of secondary sexual characteristics, maintaining spermatogenesis, affecting metabolism, and promoting red blood cell production. The physiological effects of testosterone mainly include the following five aspects:

1. Affect embryonic development and promote the growth and development of male accessory organs. Testosterone can stimulate the growth and development of accessory organs such as the prostate, penis, scrotum, and bulbourethral glands.

2. Stimulate the growth of reproductive organs and the appearance of secondary sexual characteristics. Testosterone can stimulate and maintain male secondary sexual characteristics and can also produce and maintain normal sexual desire.

3. Maintain spermatogenesis. After testosterone is secreted from interstitial cells, it can penetrate the basement membrane into the seminiferous tubules, bind to the corresponding receptors of spermatogenic cells, and promote sperm production.

4. Affect metabolism. Testosterone can promote protein synthesis, especially protein synthesis in muscles and bones; affect water and salt metabolism, which is beneficial to the retention of water and sodium in the body; and increase calcium and phosphorus deposition in bones.

5. In addition, testosterone can stimulate the production of red blood cells and increase the number of red blood cells in the body.

What causes high testosterone? If a woman is found to have high testosterone, it is likely caused by abnormal ovarian function; if a man is found to have high testosterone, it is likely caused by abnormal testicular function. High testosterone levels are commonly seen in:

1. Precocious puberty: idiopathic male precocious puberty, familial male precocious puberty;

2. Adrenal diseases: adrenal cortical hyperplasia, adrenal cortical tumors (adenocarcinoma increases significantly, adenoma also often increases);

3. Testicular diseases: testicular tumors, testicular feminization;

4. Ovarian diseases: polycystic ovary syndrome, ovarian masculinizing tumors;

5. Others: pineal tumor, idiopathic hirsutism, hypothyroidism, androgen, HCG and estrogen treatment are moderate.

The effects of high testosterone in women are: high testosterone in women will manifest as menstrual changes such as infrequent menstruation, amenorrhea or dysfunctional uterine bleeding, ovulation dysfunction, and basal body temperature. After a long period of onset, some patients will have masculine changes, such as excessive hair growth, enlarged Adam's apple, deep voice, etc. Some are obese, have acne, poor breast development, poor uterine development, enlarged ovaries, etc. A small number of patients will experience clitoral enlargement, which will affect normal ovulation and cause infertility.
