What lakes are there in Tibet?

The three holy lakes in Tibet are: Namtso Lake in Lhasa, Yamdrok Lake in Shannan, and Mapam Yumtso Lake in Ngari. In addition, there are other famous lakes with unique scenery: Pangong Lake, Laangcuo Lake, Zharinam Lake, Peigu Lake, Seling Lake, Zhegu Lake, Lhamo Lacuo Lake, Basongcuo Lake, Coqen Lake, Ranwu Lake, etc.

Namtso Lake, located in the central part of Tibet Autonomous Region, is the second largest lake in Tibet and the third largest saltwater lake in China. The lake is 4,718 meters above sea level and is approximately rectangular in shape, more than 70 kilometers long from east to west and more than 30 kilometers wide from north to south.

Yamdrok Yumtso, also known as Yanghu Lake by some people, means "Jade Lake" in Tibetan. It is one of the three sacred lakes in Tibet. It looks like a coral branch, so it is also called "the upper coral lake" in Tibetan.

Where to go in Tibet

1. Basongcuo: Located in Gongbujiangda County, Nyingchi Prefecture, Tibet, it is about 3,700 meters above sea level. The lake area is more than 6,000 mu. The lake is shaped like a crescent inlaid in the high gorge and deep valley. It is about 12 kilometers long and is a sacred lake and holy place of the Nyingma School of Tibetan Buddhism. The Basongcuo scenic area integrates snow-capped mountains, lakes, forests, waterfalls, pastures, cultural relics, and famous temples. The scenery is different in four seasons, and there are many kinds of wild rare plants. It is really a paradise on earth.

2. Jokhang Temple: Also known as Zulakang and Jokhang, Jokhang Temple has a supreme status in Tibetan Buddhism. It is the most splendid existing building in Tibet from the Tubo period. It is also the earliest civil structure building in Tibet, and it pioneered the Tibetan flat-style temple layout.

3. Tashilhunpo Monastery: It is the largest monastery of the Gelug Sect of Tibetan Buddhism in the western Tibet region and one of the six famous Yellow Sect monasteries in China. The monastery was first built in the 12th year of the Zhengtong reign of the Ming Dynasty. After renovation and expansion by successive Panchen Lamas, it has become the magnificent complex it is today.
