What is a weak positive pregnancy test?

When taking a pregnancy test, there are generally two results on the early pregnancy test paper or pregnancy test stick, one is positive and the other is negative. A positive result means you are pregnant, while a negative result means you are not pregnant. However, some people will get a weak positive result after taking an early pregnancy test. This result is most likely caused by a short pregnancy, and may also be related to threatened abortion, ectopic pregnancy or biochemical pregnancy.

1. Short pregnancy time

The pregnancy test stick determines whether a woman is pregnant by testing the human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG) in her urine. If a woman has just become pregnant, the hCG concentration in her urine will be relatively low, and the results of the pregnancy test stick will appear dark and light on consecutive days.

Women with regular menstrual cycles should calculate their ovulation day. Generally, women's ovulation day is between two menstrual periods. For example, if the menstrual cycle is 28 days, the ovulation day may be around the 14th day. It takes about 7-10 days for the fertilized egg to implant. Only after implantation will the placenta be formed and hCG will be produced. However, the amount of hCG produced at the beginning is relatively small, and it will take at least a week to slowly increase. Therefore, it is best to do a pregnancy test about 14 days after having sex.

2. Threatened abortion

In some pregnancies, the implantation of the fertilized egg is unstable, and there may be threatened abortion, slight vaginal bleeding, abdominal pain, etc. In this case, bed rest and oral medication for preserving the pregnancy are required.

3. Ectopic pregnancy

When the fertilized egg implants outside the uterus, a small amount of bleeding will occur at the beginning. Color Doppler ultrasound examination shows no gestational sac in the uterine cavity. The doubling of blood HCG needs to be monitored. If the growth is slow, ectopic pregnancy is highly suspected and needs close observation.

4. Biochemical pregnancy

The fertilized egg has been aborted before entering the uterine cavity. In this case, the urine pregnancy test is weakly positive and a blood HCG test is needed to confirm the diagnosis. If the blood HCG does not increase but decreases, it can be confirmed as a biochemical pregnancy. In this case, the bleeding is the same as menstruation, which does not require special treatment and does not affect the next pregnancy. You can continue to prepare for pregnancy next month.
