Progesterone is also known as progesterone. It can also be called progesterone, progesterone, progestagen, progesterone, progestin or progesterone, etc. It is called progesterone in English, abbreviated as "P". It is a progestin that can protect the female endometrium. During pregnancy, progesterone can provide support and protection for the early growth and development of the fetus, and can have a certain calming effect on the uterus. In clinical practice, the progesterone content in women's bodies can be used to diagnose whether they have symptoms of threatened abortion, and it can also be used to determine whether the corpus luteum function and ovarian ovulation are normal.

Progesterone has a significant morphological effect on the estrogen-stimulated endometrium in the body and is necessary for maintaining pregnancy. Therefore, the manifestations of progesterone deficiency are mainly shortened menstrual cycles in women, or menstrual irregularities such as frequent menstruation. So I must pay attention to it and take timely treatment measures. Usually, we will inject progesterone into the muscles to make up for the deficiency of progesterone during treatment.

What are the effects of progesterone

Progesterone is a natural progestin secreted by the corpus luteum of the ovary. It has a significant morphological effect on the estrogen-stimulated endometrium in the body and is necessary for maintaining pregnancy.

① In the later stage of the menstrual cycle, it causes the glands in the uterine mucosa to grow, the uterus to become congested, and the endometrium to thicken, preparing for the implantation of the fertilized egg. After the fertilized egg is implanted, it produces the placenta, reduces the excitability of the pregnant uterus, inhibits its activity, and allows the fetus to grow safely.

② Working together with estrogen, it promotes full development of the breasts in preparation for milk production.

③ It closes the cervix, reduces and thickens the mucus, making it difficult for sperm to penetrate; in large doses, it has a negative feedback effect on the hypothalamus, inhibiting the secretion of pituitary gonadotropin and producing an ovulation-inhibiting effect. This product reaches its peak blood concentration 1 to 3 hours after oral administration. It is inactivated due to rapid metabolism, so it is generally administered by injection, but sublingual or vaginal or rectal administration is also effective.

It is rapidly absorbed through the vaginal mucosa and reaches peak blood concentration after 2 to 6 hours. It is mainly used clinically for habitual abortion, dysmenorrhea, excessive menstrual bleeding or metrorrhagia, amenorrhea, etc. Oral high doses are also used for conditions caused by progesterone deficiency, such as premenstrual syndrome, menstrual disorders caused by cessation of ovulation, benign breast disease, premenopause and menopause, etc. Vaginal administration may be an alternative to oral administration, especially for patients with liver disease.
