The reason why lochia is always red

Lochia is a substance that is discharged from the lower body of every woman after giving birth. Because lochia is a substance produced by the placental decidua after a woman gives birth, most lochia is bright red or brown or black. Right after a woman gives birth, the lochia that is discharged is bright red, and over time, it will gradually turn black. But is it normal to find that the lochia you discharge is always bright red?

Postpartum lochia is red at first, and usually becomes lighter after 3-4 days. If it remains red, it may be due to poor uterine recovery or infection. It is recommended to pay attention to your hygiene, avoid spicy food, get more rest and strengthen nutrition, consider abstaining from sexual life, and do a good job of postpartum check-up.

Whether it is normal for postpartum lochia to be dark red depends on when the lochia is discharged, because the lochia discharged within a few days after delivery is originally red. The color will be darker at the beginning. As time goes by, the color of the lochia will gradually become lighter until it becomes white lochia. Why does the color gradually become lighter? This is because the lochia at the beginning contains more blood and blood clots, so it appears as red lochia. Gradually, the amount of uterine bleeding will decrease a lot, while other secretions will increase, and the color of lochia will become lighter and lighter. If the color of lochia remains blood red and does not change, you need to go to the hospital for examination in time to determine the cause of uterine bleeding and prevent chronic anemia.

If the lochia is almost discharged and red lochia comes again, it is necessary to determine whether it is menstruation, because women's menstruation will resume after childbirth, but it is very irregular, especially during breastfeeding. The time of menstruation after childbirth is also not fixed. Some people have menstruation in just ten days, while others need three or four months to have their first menstruation. If the red discharge disappears after a few days after the lochia is clean, it is very likely that menstruation has come, so the patient does not need to worry.
