What to eat after giving birth to remove lochia

After a normal delivery, some lochia will be discharged from the uterus, and after giving birth, waste will be discharged from the uterus, vagina, etc. Don't be afraid at this stage. This is a detoxification process that will better excrete the waste that was not excreted during pregnancy. During this process, be careful not to catch a cold, maintain hygiene, drink more nourishing red dates and longan tea or hot water to keep your body warm.

What to eat after giving birth to remove lochia

After a normal delivery, the uterus will discharge some lochia. The doctor will advise the mother to keep warm, drink some hot brown sugar water, keep the body clean, strengthen nutrition, eat a light and nutritious diet, eat less irritating, raw and cold food, and not have sexual intercourse within two months.

Generally speaking, lochia can be discharged within three weeks after delivery. If it continues to discharge after three weeks, it is called "retained lochia". In the TCM classic “The Heart of Pregnancy and Childbirth” it is mentioned: “Due to the damage to menstrual blood during delivery, the woman is weak and insufficient, unable to collect blood, or the bad blood is not completely eliminated, then the good blood will be difficult to calm down, and will flow out together and will not stop for a long time.” Therefore, the continued lochia is often related to “weakness” or “blood stasis”. Such pregnant women should choose Chinese herbal medicines such as ginseng, rehmannia, and poria that have the effect of invigorating qi and stimulating blood for conditioning. Blood stasis is caused by the deficiency of the uterine vessels after childbirth, which allows the cold pathogen to invade the body and fight against the blood, forming blood stasis. For this, motherwort, hawthorn, etc. should be used to promote blood circulation, remove blood stasis, promote qi and relieve pain. Of course, there are also some cases of parturients being related to blood heat.

You can eat millet, egg and brown sugar porridge. The ingredients include 100 grams of fresh millet, 3 eggs, and an appropriate amount of brown sugar. Because millet is rich in nutrients, it is an excellent product for postpartum nourishment. Eaten together with eggs and brown sugar, it can nourish the spleen and stomach, replenish qi and blood, and activate blood circulation. It is suitable for symptoms such as postpartum weakness, dry mouth and thirst, and retained lochia.

Causes of postpartum lochia

1. There are many reasons for postpartum lochia, such as endometritis; partial placenta and fetal membrane residues; myometritis or pelvic infection; uterine submucosal or intramural tumors; uterine adenomyoma; excessive retroversion or retroflexion of the uterus; excessive amniotic fluid and excessive placenta that weakens the uterine muscle contraction and affects uterine involution, etc. Uterine trophoblastic tumors can also cause uterine bleeding.

2. Western medicine believes that postpartum lochia that continues to occur is a type of late postpartum hemorrhage. The main cause of the disease is incomplete uterine involution, when part of the placenta or fetal membrane remains or becomes infected, affecting uterine contraction and involution. Other systemic factors of the mother, such as chronic diseases, excessive blood loss, excessive fatigue, failure to recover physical fitness, or local factors such as excessive uterine expansion and uterine fibroids, can all affect incomplete uterine recovery. Secondly, after cesarean section, the uterine wall incision ruptures, bleeding is not completely stopped during surgery, or there is postoperative infection, which affects the recovery of the uterus and causes continuous bleeding. In addition, postpartum uterine trophoblastic tumors and submucosal uterine fibroids may also present with persistent lochia.

3. Tissue residues. It may be due to uterine malformation, uterine fibroids, etc., or it may be due to the unskilled operation operator, resulting in incomplete removal of the pregnancy tissue, causing some tissue to remain in the uterine cavity. At this time, in addition to the unclean lochia, the amount of bleeding varies, with blood clots inside, and is accompanied by intermittent abdominal pain.
