The structure of the pelvis

The structure of the pelvis

The structure of the female pelvis is composed of the sacrum, coccyx and hip bones. The size of the pelvis has nothing to do with whether a natural birth is possible. During the pregnancy checkup, the shape of the pelvis and other factors will be used to consider whether natural childbirth is appropriate. The pelvis can generally be divided into four types based on its shape. The female-shaped and ape-shaped pelvis are beneficial for normal delivery. Women should try not to wear high heels and maintain a good sitting posture to prevent pelvic deformation.

The structure of the pelvis

The pelvis is composed of the sacrum, coccyx, and two hip bones (formed by the fusion of the ilium, ischium, and pubis).

Boundary: A circular line formed by the sacral promontory, arcuate line, pubic pecten, pubic tubercle, and upper edge of the pubic symphysis.

This boundary divides the pelvis into two parts, the upper one is the greater pelvis or false pelvis, and the lower one is the lesser pelvis or true pelvis (referred to as pelvis). A large pelvis supports the enlarged uterus during pregnancy but has nothing to do with childbirth. Clinically, the condition of the true pelvis can be indirectly understood by observing the shape of the greater pelvis and measuring certain diameters.

The shape of the female pelvis

The shapes of the female pelvis can be roughly divided into four types. One is the female type, which is round or transversely oval. The second type is the male type, which is heart-shaped or funnel-shaped. The third type is the ape-like type, which is long and oval in shape. The fourth type is the flat type, which is transversely oval, but the anterior-posterior diameter is very short.

Among these four pelvic shapes, the female and ape-type pelvises are easier for natural childbirth, while the male and flat types are not conducive to natural childbirth. Therefore, before delivery, an important examination is to measure the pelvic diameter of the pregnant woman to determine the mode of delivery.

If there is really pelvic abnormality, we will make delivery recommendations that are most suitable for the pregnant woman's own conditions when delivery is imminent. For the vast majority of pregnant women, as long as they ensure a healthy and balanced diet during pregnancy, properly control their weight during pregnancy, and prevent the fetus from becoming giant, delivery will basically be smooth.

What bad habits can affect the shape of your pelvis?

Often wearing high heels can make women's backs straighter and their legs look longer. However, high heels will add burden to women's ankles and knees, and easily cause leg and pelvic muscle fatigue. There are also many women who like to cross their legs. Crossing their legs can cause long-term pressure on the pelvis and hip joints, which can easily cause soreness. Over time, the pelvis will tilt unknowingly. In addition, an unsuitable mattress can also cause women's accustomed pelvic tilt. If the mattress is too soft, the body will fall during sleep, and if it is too hard, it will compress the heavier pelvic area of the human body. Both of these situations can cause pelvic tilt.
