Does having an IUD affect future pregnancy?

In life, many couples who do not want babies will choose various methods of contraception. Among them, IUD insertion is a relatively common contraceptive method. Especially some women who have given birth to a baby will basically choose IUD insertion for contraception when they do not want a second child. Although in life some women still get pregnant after IUD insertion, such phenomenon is still relatively rare.

Does having an IUD affect future pregnancy?

1. Intrauterine contraceptive device (commonly known as IUD) mainly achieves contraceptive effect by changing the natural environment in the uterine cavity, affecting the development and implantation of the fertilized egg and other mechanisms. It is widely accepted by women because of its safety, effectiveness, simplicity, economy and reversibility. At present, the main intrauterine contraceptive devices used clinically are copper-containing intrauterine devices (such as TCu200, TCu220C, etc.). In recent years, some new types of drug-release intrauterine contraceptive devices have emerged that can release low doses of drugs locally in the uterine cavity. In addition to contraception, they can also treat certain gynecological diseases.

2. Although IUD insertion is a simple and safe contraceptive method, it also has some adverse reactions and complications. If the IUD is improperly placed, or does not match the size and shape of the uterine cavity, it may cause the IUD to fall off or move downward. The downward movement of the IUD will affect the contraceptive effect and cause pregnancy with the device. Each type of intrauterine contraceptive device has a certain shedding rate and pregnancy rate. According to statistics, the one-year shedding rate of TCu200 is 5.61% and the one-year pregnancy rate is 1.51%. The complications of the new intrauterine contraceptive device are significantly reduced, and the 5-year cumulative expulsion rate and pregnancy rate with the device are both less than 1%.

3. It can be seen that women of childbearing age can still become pregnant after having an IUD inserted. If pregnancy is confirmed, it is not advisable to continue the pregnancy considering the effect of the intrauterine device on the embryo. In addition, the intrauterine device is a contraindication for medical abortion, so an artificial abortion should be performed as soon as possible to terminate the pregnancy.

Causes of pregnancy after IUD insertion

1. If you have diabetes, your blood sugar is too high, the acidity of your body fluids increases, and the metal ring is corroded, affecting contraception.

2. The position of the ring is not accurate. For example, if the IUD is not placed at the bottom of the uterus, it will not achieve the contraceptive effect.

3. After the IUD is inserted, physical activities such as squatting are performed, or sometimes it is due to sexual intercourse, which causes the IUD to shift and fall off, leading to contraceptive failure.

4. The ring is placed for too long and is not replaced in time. Because of the monthly exfoliation of the endometrium and menstrual stimulation, the ring will fall off or move downward.

5. In addition to issues such as the material, quality, and shape of the IUD itself. When the cervix and endometrium cannot contact the ring, it is very unfavorable for the implantation of the fertilized egg. Sometimes the ring falls out of the uterine cavity due to the wrong size.
