Why is the episiotomy wound painful?

Why is the episiotomy wound painful?

In fact, the pain caused by episiotomy to women is no less than that caused by caesarean section. Because episiotomy mainly performs surgery on the female vulva, women should pay attention to the degree of recovery of their wounds after episiotomy. The chance of episiotomy wound infection is very high, mainly because the vulva is in a position that is susceptible to bacterial infection. But why do some pregnant women find that their episiotomy wounds are swollen and painful?

Why is the episiotomy wound painful?

In fact, it is normal to feel distended and painful in the episiotomy wound after a normal delivery. This is because the damaged skin tissue has not yet healed completely. Also, every mother has a different physical constitution and different sensitivity to pain. So when the postpartum anesthetic wears off, the mother will feel distended and painful in the episiotomy wound. Some mothers may feel severe burning pain, which may even affect their normal sleep and rest.

In addition, if you still feel swelling and pain in the episiotomy wound three days after delivery, you should pay attention to it. Once the wound is observed to be hot, red, swollen, indurated or has secretions, it may be infected or inflamed, causing the swelling and pain.

How to relieve episiotomy pain

When resting, the mother should try to lie flat, which can reduce the pressure on the muscles. At the same time, she can place a pillow on the hips and waist to relieve the pain of the wound. In addition, be careful not to compress the chest when resting, so as to prevent the mammary glands from being compressed and affecting milk secretion.

When the mother urinates or defecates after delivery, she should pay attention to sitting forward, or she can take a half-squatting position to avoid pain in the wound. At the same time, she should pay attention to cleanliness after urinating or defecating to avoid wound infection.

In addition, the mother should get out of bed and walk around the next day after delivery, and should start doing some basic pelvic contraction exercises three days later to speed up the body's recovery.

If you really feel pain, you can take some painkillers or apply topical medications under the guidance of a doctor, or you can wash with potassium permanganate solution, all of which can relieve pain and promote wound healing.
