Down syndrome screening for pregnant women

Down syndrome screening for pregnant women

Many women do not take prenatal checkups seriously, thinking that they are in good health and the fetus will grow up healthily. However, according to relevant data, on average one child with Down syndrome is born in my country every twenty minutes, so this is a very serious problem. Pregnant women should be screened for Down syndrome. Down syndrome, which we often call mentally retarded children, can be detected during the fetal period and the pregnancy can be terminated in time.

Down syndrome screening is the most common item in pregnancy check-up. It can not only prevent the birth of children with congenital defects, but also determine whether there are children with congenital defects.

In our country, on average, a child with Down syndrome (Down syndrome, also known as congenital idiocy, is the result of chromosomal abnormalities) is born every 20 minutes, and a child with congenital defects, mainly deformities, congenital heart disease, hearing and vision impairments, and leukemia, is born every 2 seconds. The random bleeding of defective children not only brings pain to the families, but also imposes a huge economic burden on society.

Therefore, prenatal screening for Down syndrome during pregnancy must be strictly implemented. Generally speaking, the 15th to 20th week of pregnancy is the best time for Down syndrome screening.

It is understood that Down syndrome is a sporadic disease. Every pregnant woman has the possibility of pregnant with a child with Down syndrome. The incidence rate increases with the age of the pregnant woman. So far, there is neither effective prevention nor treatment for this disease in medicine. It can only be discovered as early as possible through prenatal screening and diagnosis, and the birth of children with Down syndrome can be prevented by termination of pregnancy. This cannot be ignored.

Although the Down syndrome screening results cannot accurately determine whether the baby is mentally retarded, it is the most economical, simple and non-destructive method to determine whether the baby is mentally retarded. If the results are suspicious, amniocentesis can be performed further. Amniocentesis has certain risks and may cause rupture of the amniotic membrane, leading to miscarriage, and it is also expensive. Down syndrome screening is a more economical, simple and harmless test method to the fetus.
