Can pregnant women use hormone cream?

Women are also often more susceptible to medical problems during pregnancy. Once it occurs, treatment needs to be carefully considered because it will affect the development of the fetus in the body. Therefore, pregnant women should be cautious even if they have the most common cold and fever. Eczema is a common disease problem that can also occur during pregnant women. Ointments can be used to treat eczema. But there are hormone ointments. Can pregnant women use hormone ointments?

Eczema is an inflammatory skin disease with a significant exudative tendency caused by a variety of internal and external factors. There is obvious itching and easy recurrence, which seriously affects the patient's quality of life.

Topical medications are the mainstay of treatment for eczema

Choose appropriate drugs according to the patient's age and the nature of the skin lesions. For example, use calamine lotion, topical hormone ointment, zinc oxide oil, moisturizer, emollient and so on.

Some pregnant mothers consider the effects of drugs on the fetus, and are unwilling to take drugs even if they suffer from eczema, and just endure it. However, if the eczema is moderate to severe, the increased itching will seriously affect the sleep of the pregnant mother, and poor physical condition will also affect the development of the fetus.

Can pregnant women with eczema use hormone ointment?

Most studies have found no significant association between maternal use of topical hormones and adverse pregnancy outcomes, including mode of delivery, birth defects, preterm birth, and fetal death.

There is indeed evidence that maternal use of potent topical hormones, particularly in high amounts, is associated with low birth weight.

There is no increased risk of low birth weight when low-potency/intermediate-potency topical hormones are used during pregnancy.

Theoretically, the risk of adverse events increases when treating areas of high absorption (e.g., genitals, eyelids, axillae).

I have to analyze this in depth here to avoid misunderstandings among expectant mothers.

1. The guidelines do not say that pregnant women are prohibited from using topical hormones, including for eczema.

2. For eczema, whether to use topical hormonal ointment should be decided based on the severity of the disease and the location of the disease.

3. In some cases, if calamine lotion, zinc oxide and other medicines with no side effects are used but have no effect, there is no need for expectant mothers to endure without treatment.

In fact, for pregnant women who are more than 3 months pregnant, the chance of adverse reactions to topical hormone ointments, especially weak hormones, is extremely low.

Weak or soft hormones available:

Hydrocortisone butyrate cream, mometasone furoate cream

Try not to use strong hormone ointments:

Halometasone cream, clobetasol propionate. Pay special attention to compound preparations containing clobetasol propionate, such as compound ketoconazole cream.

How to use hormone ointment:

Apply hydrocortisone butyrate cream twice a day for no more than 2 weeks.

Mometasone furoate cream should be applied once daily for no more than 2 weeks.

Treatment methods for eczema that are not suitable for hormonal ointments

A small number of cases of eczema are not suitable for the use of hormonal ointments because of excessive exudation.

At this time, it is recommended to use calamine lotion and zinc oxide oil (note: not zinc oxide ointment). You can use saline compresses.

In addition, eczema with more exudation is often accompanied by secondary bacterial infection, which can be treated with external application of erythromycin ointment or fusidic acid cream. Sometimes oral medication is also needed.
