Will menstruation occur with premature ovarian failure?

Many middle-aged women suffer from premature ovarian failure. After premature ovarian failure, they begin to experience irregular menstruation. Menstruation becomes disordered and may be advanced or delayed. Slowly, menstruation begins to end and they enter menopause. In fact, there are symptoms of premature ovarian failure, such as dry eyes, irregular menstruation, joint pain, reproductive organ problems, etc., which can be discovered with careful observation. This article introduces the specific content, let’s take a look.

Symptoms of premature ovarian failure

1. Dry eyes

Dry eyes are often mistaken for overuse of the eyes. In fact, this symptom also occurs when there is premature ovarian failure. This is because when women's ovarian function gradually degenerates due to aging, the hormone secretion in their bodies will be insufficient, resulting in dry eyes, dry and aging skin, low libido, irregular menstruation, early menopause, insomnia, irritability and anxiety, mood swings, abnormal hot flashes, fluctuating moods and loss of self-confidence.

2. Irregular menstruation

Most patients with premature ovarian failure will have infrequent menstruation, light menstrual flow, and an atrophic uterus. The uterus may sometimes shrink and become smaller. Patients will also experience hot flashes, irritability, sweating, and excitement. Some patients will also have insomnia and other symptoms. Menstruation will stop before the age of 40. The vast majority will have a period of menstrual disorders before entering a persistent amenorrhea.

3. Joint pain

Knee joint pain is particularly obvious and is a common symptom among menopausal women.

4. Reproductive organs

Pubic hair and armpit hair will fall off, sexual desire will decrease, vaginal secretions will decrease, there will be pain during sexual intercourse, and occasionally there will be intestinal discomfort. Most patients will have gastrointestinal discomfort in the early stages, such as abdominal distension, decreased appetite, weight loss, etc.

5. Neurological symptoms

Patients often have symptoms such as emotional instability, premature ovarian failure, irritability, tension, insomnia, nightmares, and memory loss.

6. Cardiovascular symptoms

Patients with premature ovarian failure often have bouts of fever, or hot and cold, sweating, and sometimes dizziness. These symptoms may occur several or dozens of times a day, and often occur at night. Some women even experience symptoms such as stuffiness, shortness of breath, rapid heartbeat, and high blood pressure, all of which are caused by vascular dysfunction.

7. Other symptoms

Symptoms of premature ovarian failure also include breast atrophy and sagging, loose and rough skin, tension, frequent dreams, suspicion, palpitations, osteoporosis, joint pain, inflammation of the reproductive organs, uterine prolapse, urinary incontinence, constipation, acne, and pigmentation.

Causes of premature ovarian failure

1. Genetic factors : Through careful analysis of family history, about 10% of patients with premature ovarian failure have a family history. Genetic factors are divided into: ① X chromosome deletion. Common in patients with Turner syndrome. X chromosome deletions are usually caused by errors in the differentiation of germ cells. ②Gene mutation. At present, there have been further breakthroughs in the research on the genetic genes of premature ovarian failure. Experts have discovered a recessive genetic gene - the mutated HFM1 gene. That is to say, if the father and the mother each carry a mutated HFM1 gene, then their daughter has a 1/4 chance of experiencing premature ovarian failure. This discovery may help people with a family history to predict disease in the future and get pregnant early to avoid regrets;

2. Immune factors : accounting for about 20% of patients with premature ovarian failure. Anti-ovarian antibodies can be detected in the blood of this type of patients (this antibody can affect the development and function of the ovaries and follicles, leading to premature ovarian failure). Patients often have other autoimmune diseases such as lupus erythematosus, rheumatoid arthritis, etc.

3. Idiopathic premature ovarian failure : It is the most common type of premature ovarian failure in clinical practice. The patient has normal chromosomes, autoimmune antibodies are usually not detected, and there is no clear cause of the disease.

4. Iatrogenic factors: including surgery, radiotherapy and chemotherapy of the reproductive system. However, after chemotherapy drugs are stopped, the ovaries can resume normal function in 65% to 70% of patients.

5. Other factors : such as infection with certain pathogenic bacteria, which invade the ovaries and cause inflammation, and eventually develop into premature ovarian failure. Environmental and psychological factors, work pressure, smoking, etc. may also be the causes of premature ovarian failure.
