What is the thickness of the endometrium before and after menstruation?

Menstruation is a physiological manifestation unique to women. It is directly related to women's physical health. Even some gynecological diseases in women are related to menstruation. As one of the most important organs in the female body, I believe that few women have a comprehensive understanding of the uterus. They only know that the baby is conceived in the uterus. What is the thickness of the lining of the vagina on the third day of menstruation?

1. Proliferative stage

Around day 5-9 of the menstrual cycle, the endometrium is very thin. In the early stages of proliferation, the endometrium appears as a thin echo line, about 4-6 mm thick. In the middle stage of hyperplasia, the endometrium gradually shows three strong echo lines, and the low echo area in between is two layers of functional endometrium with a thickness of about 8-10mm. In the late stage of hyperplasia, the thickness of the endometrium increases to about 9-10 mm.

2. Secretory phase

On the 15th to 19th day of menstruation, which is 1 to 5 days after ovulation, the endometrium continues to thicken and the glands further increase in size and curvature. Around the 20th to 24th day of the menstrual cycle, which is 6 to 10 days after ovulation, the endometrium shows a high degree of secretory activity, and the curvature and expansion of the glands reach their peak. During the late secretory phase, the normal thickness of the endometrium before menstruation is about 5-6mm.

3. Menstrual period

Days 1-4 of the menstrual cycle. At this time, the levels of estrogen and progesterone decrease, activating the synthesis of prostaglandins in the endometrium. Prostaglandins can stimulate the contraction of the uterine muscle layer and cause continuous spasm of the spiral arterioles in the functional layer of the endometrium, resulting in a decrease in endometrial blood flow. The area of damaged, ischemic, and necrotic tissue gradually expands. Tissue degeneration and necrosis, increased permeability of the blood vessel wall, and rupture of the blood vessels lead to the formation of hematoma at the bottom of the intima, which promotes tissue necrosis and exfoliation. The degenerated and necrotic endometrium mixes with blood and is discharged to form menstrual blood. The normal thickness of the endometrium can reach 8-10mm.

We all know the thickness of the endometrium on the third day after menstruation. We also have an understanding of the thickness during each menstrual period, so we can know whether it is normal. We should pay attention to the thickness of the endometrium because it is related to our female fertility.
