The cervix is one of the important tissues and organs in the female reproductive system. From the embryo and female fetus to old age, the cervix involves disease prevention and health care issues such as gynecology, obstetrics, family planning, women's health and reproductive health throughout a woman's life. It involves the health of the women themselves, family happiness, economic and social issues, and is also closely related to sex and reproduction. The cervix may have a variety of diseases, including abnormal embryonic development, inflammation, tumor-like lesions, benign tumors, malignant tumors, injuries, cervical infertility, family planning, assisted reproductive technology, cervix and sex, cervical pregnancy, cervical dystocia and many other obstetrics and gynecology problems. The cervix is an important line of defense to prevent pathogens from entering the internal reproductive organs, but it itself is also attacked by various pathogenic factors (female childbirth, miscarriage, surgical damage to the cervix, etc.); and the cervical endometrium has many wrinkles and cracks, and bacteria lurking here are difficult to eliminate and can easily cause cervical inflammation. This disease can be divided into acute and chronic types. The latter is often caused by the failure to cure the former in time. Chronic cervicitis is more common in clinical practice. Its most obvious symptom is an increase in sticky white mucus or purulent yellow mucus leucorrhea. In addition, it may be accompanied by vulvar itching, lumbar pain, etc.

Location

The cervix is located in the lower part of the uterus, 2.5 to 3 cm long, with the upper end connected to the uterine body and the lower end extending deep into the vagina.

Cervical function

The cervix protrudes into the vagina and contains glands that secrete a kind of mucus, namely cervical mucus. The properties and amount of this mucus, like the endometrium, are affected by ovarian function and show obvious cyclical changes. During ovulation, under the action of estrogen, the cervical mucus becomes thinner, which is conducive to the passage of sperm. At the same time, sperm can also absorb nutrients from the cervical mucus, increase its vitality, and promote the combination of sperm and egg. After ovulation, under the action of progesterone, the cervical mucus decreases and becomes thicker, and a mucus plug may form in the cervical canal, separating the cervix from the outside world and producing a protective effect. At the same time, it is not conducive to the passage of sperm through the cervix.

⑴The cervix is the first barrier for sperm to pass through. It secretes mucus. As the menstrual cycle changes, under the action of estrogen, the cervical mucus becomes very thin, which is conducive to the passage of sperm.

⑵The cervical canal is where sperm is stored. Its inner wall has many recesses and fissures, where sperm can be temporarily stored for 1 to 2 weeks, waiting to gain energy before entering the uterus.

⑶After pregnancy, the uterus continues to grow to accommodate the growth of the fetus. But the cervix remains closed, ensuring that the fetus grows safely inside it until the pregnancy is full term.

⑷ At full term, the cervix gradually softens and begins to expand during delivery, and the cervical opening opens from 0.5 cm to 10 cm, opening the first door for the smooth delivery of the fetus. Therefore, the cervix is the only way for the delivery of the fetus.

⑸ Some people believe that the cervix is also a sexually sensitive organ and has a certain relationship with sexual life.
