Lochia suddenly increases and becomes bright red

Women usually discharge lochia after giving birth naturally. Lochia is no different from normal menstruation. It is generally more abundant and is red or dark red at first, then gradually turns pink and the amount becomes smaller. Generally speaking, it can be completely discharged within 42 days after delivery. If it is still not completely discharged 42 days after delivery or there is a sudden increase in the amount of stool during this period, it must be taken seriously and it is best to go to the hospital for a follow-up examination.

The components of lochia include blood, mucus, necrotic decidual tissue and bacteria, and it has a fishy smell. The amount and composition of lochia will change with the time after delivery. Generally, within 3 to 7 days after delivery, the lochia is bloody, with a large amount of blood, bright red color, and contains a large amount of blood, mucus and necrotic decidual tissue, and has a bloody smell. Later, as the endometrium is repaired, the amount of bleeding gradually decreases and it becomes serous lochia with a smaller amount and lighter color. It contains less blood, a relatively increased cervical mucus, and necrotic decidual tissue, vaginal secretions and bacteria.

It turns white or light yellow in about 2 to 4 weeks, forming white lochia, which is less in amount and no longer contains blood. It usually lasts for about 3 weeks before stopping. Normal menstrual blood is dark red, mixed with endometrial debris and mucus, and occasionally small blood clots. The menstrual period is usually 3 to 5 days, and the normal range is 2 to 7 days. The average total amount of bleeding is about 50 ml.

At the beginning, the lochia is more abundant and red, sometimes dark red, and then slowly turns pink and gradually decreases. When it is almost gone, it will occasionally appear bright red and become more abundant. It should be completely gone after about one or two days. If the lochia is still not clean within 42 days after delivery, you should pay attention. If the lochia suddenly turns bright red, it is recommended that you go to the hospital for a check-up to see if there is any residue in the uterus.

How long does it take for postpartum lochia to be clean?

Generally, the discharge can be completely eliminated about one month after the birth of the new mother, but for a small number of women, it may continue until the first menstruation. In the week before discharge, the discharge is mostly red in color and large in volume. After a week, the discharge volume gradually decreases and turns into brown. After 10 days, the color begins to turn into white, and the fishy smell gradually fades.

1. Blood type lochia. It is the red discharge that flows out after delivery, which contains a lot of blood, a large amount of discharge, a small amount of fetal membrane and necrotic decidual tissue, and is accompanied by blood clots. It usually lasts about 4 days, after which the color will gradually become lighter and the amount of discharge will decrease.

2. Serous lochia. It often appears one week after delivery. The amount of blood will gradually decrease, while the serous components will increase, which are mostly bacteria, cervical mucus, necrotic exfoliated tissue, etc., and it lasts about 10 days.

3. White lochia. The excreted fluid is white and contains many white blood cells. At this time, there is not much blood in it. Most of it is necrotic tissue decidua. It usually takes three weeks to be completely discharged.
