Female head circumference standard table

Female head circumference standard table

Head circumference, as the name suggests, is the size of our head. Moreover, our head cannot be too big or too small, because these situations are abnormal. If we find that our head circumference is not within the normal range, we must seek medical attention in time to avoid worse situations. Let us now understand the standards for female head circumference!

1. Overview

The head circumference is the length from the protrusion above the eyebrow arch to the occipital tubercle. It is closely related to the development of the brain. The average head circumference at birth is 34cm, which increases by 8-10cm in the first six months and 2-4cm in the second six months. The head circumference is 44cm at 6 months, 46cm (same as chest circumference) at 1 year old, 48cm at 2 years old, 50cm at 5 years old, and close to adults at 54-58cm at 15 years old.

2. Head circumference measurement

Measure with a tape measure. The child should stand, sit or lie on his/her back, and fix the 0 point of the tape measure on the upper edge of the eyebrow arch on one side of the head. The tape measure should be close to the scalp (if there is too much hair, push it aside), and go around the highest point of the occipital tubercle and the upper edge of the eyebrow arch on the other side back to the 0 point. This is the length of the head circumference.

3. Fetal head circumference

The fetal head circumference refers to the maximum length around the fetal head. The longest part of the fetal head from front to back is usually the distance from the "root of the nose at the forehead" to the "occipital protuberance at the back of the head". Therefore, the general head circumference is the length around the "root of the nose at the forehead" to the "occipital protuberance at the back of the head".

4. The normal head circumference of a woman is about 45 to 55 cm. The size of the head is not measured, but determined by whether the size of the head matches the width of your body. The head circumference is the length from the protrusion above the eyebrow arch to the occipital tubercle. It is closely related to the development of the brain. Head circumference reflects the development of the brain and skull. It is most meaningful to measure it at the age of 2 years. A head circumference that is too large is seen in hydrocephalus and rickets, while a head circumference that is too small is seen in microcephaly. Head circumference can be measured with a tape measure.
