Why is the right breast bigger than the left?

Studies have found that under normal circumstances, a woman's left breast will be larger than her right breast, but some women are just the opposite, with their right breast larger than their left. Experts say this often happens in new mothers who are breastfeeding. If they don't pay attention when breastfeeding, the baby will often eat from the right breast, which will cause it to become larger. In addition, it may be that the mother has a certain disease and needs to go to the hospital for relevant examinations.

1. The left breast is bigger than the right breast

The breast is composed of skin, glandular tissue, connective tissue, lobular ducts, ligaments and fat. Breasts are always changing and don't fully mature until after pregnancy or breastfeeding. The ducts mature when they get the signal to lactate, or sometimes they stop waiting, about two years after a woman starts having periods, says Amanda Wheeler, MD, a breast surgeon and assistant clinical professor at Stanford University School of Medicine in California.

Once a woman reaches menopause (usually at age 40), changes that occur in the body can cause breast sagging. Without hormonal support, the lobular ducts will atrophy and shrink, and then be replaced by fatty tissue in the breast. Additionally, as you age, the connective tissue that holds your breasts firm and provides natural support to them will stretch. The breast skin begins to lose elasticity, which can lead to sagging breasts.

The left breast is bigger than the right. No two breasts are alike, not even from the same person. The nipples and areolas of a woman's two breasts tend to be consistent, and usually the left breast is larger than the right breast. Other differences may include one being taller or rounder than the other.

2. You may be wearing the wrong bra size

As for overall sizes, specialty lingerie stores privately reveal that over the past 20 years or so, the average bra size for customers in their stores has ranged from 34B to 34DD or 34E. The retailer interviewed more than 60,000 U.S. customers in 2013 and compared the results with a study it conducted in 1992. Although a woman's breast shape, size and firmness or sagging can change six times during her lifetime, women do not need to adjust their bra size very often.

The most common bra problem is that the underband is too big and the cup size is too small. Keep your bra at the back so your breasts are lifted and look more proportionate. When a bra gets bigger at the back, the cup size will also get bigger, so you'll probably need to go down a size. For example, if you've always worn a 34C, your correct size might be a 32D.
