How long does a woman's period usually last?

Young girls generally don’t care about the length of their menstruation. In fact, experienced women know that they should calculate the time of their menstruation so that they can calculate whether their menstrual cycle is within the normal range. They will also closely observe the amount of their menstrual flow. Through these manifestations of menstruation, they can know their physical health status. So how many days does a girl’s menstruation usually last?

How long does a woman's period usually last?

A menstrual cycle is from the first day of menstruation to the day before the next menstruation, generally it is 28-30 days, and the normal range of menstrual cycle is 25-35 days. Normal menstrual blood is dark red, mixed with endometrial fragments and mucus, and small blood clots can be seen in a few cases. The menstrual period is generally 3-5 days, the normal range is 2-7 days, and the total amount of bleeding each time is about 50 ml.

The menstrual cycle is divided into the follicular phase before ovulation and the luteal phase after ovulation based on the day of ovulation. The length of the follicular phase is not fixed, but the luteal phase is about 14 days, plus or minus two days.

Phase I (Follicular Phase)

From the first day of menstruation to the day before the ovulation (LH) peak, this period is about 12-22 days, which varies from person to person due to different physical conditions. The following is an average 28-day cycle as an example:

Menstruation lasts about 3-5 days. On the 7th day, the pituitary gland will secrete hormones to stimulate the development of the egg. When the egg is mature, the pituitary gland begins to secrete estrogen to stimulate the growth of a group of 3 to 30 follicles. These follicles are supplemented in the last few days of the previous cycle to accelerate growth. When the FSH level decreases, one of the supplemented follicles is selected for ovulation, and it is dispatched immediately after maturity, while the rest enter into atrophy, and the first stage ends.

The second phase (luteal phase)

The timing is roughly the same for everyone, that is, from the day of ovulation to the next menstrual period. Usually, the menstrual period comes about two weeks after ovulation, which is about 14 days.

Safe period of menstrual cycle

From the perspective of contraception, each menstrual cycle of a woman can be divided into the menstrual period, ovulation period and safe period. Ovulatory contraception is a method of contraception that stops sexual intercourse during the ovulation period. Theoretically, it can be explained in terms of one month: first, the menstrual period, which is the time when menstruation occurs, is generally about a week. Pay attention to the two words "left and right". The length of the menstrual period also varies from person to person and does not have to be a week. After the menstrual period ends, a normal period without bleeding will begin. About a week later, ovulation occurs. Ovulation is a physiological phenomenon that occurs every month in normal women of childbearing age, preparing for pregnancy and reproduction. The ovulation period is the day in the menstrual cycle when it is easiest to get pregnant, which is also what many people call the most dangerous day. Ovulation is actually just a moment, but the activity of the egg cell in the body is relatively slow, so it may survive in the female body for about 2 days before it dies and is absorbed, so pregnancy is possible during these days of ovulation. If the egg is not fertilized, it dies and is absorbed by the body. About 2 weeks later, the next menstrual period will come again, making it exactly 4 weeks, which is a menstrual cycle. Since the luteal phase (that is, the time from ovulation to the next menstrual period) is usually about 14 days, if the menstrual cycle is normal, the safe period can be calculated.
