Is medical abortion painful and how long will it last?

When a woman becomes pregnant unexpectedly, she must abort the child. After all, she is not in a position to raise a child at this time. As we all know, there are many methods of abortion, such as artificial abortion or medical abortion and so on. However, for women who are experiencing abortion for the first time, they will inevitably feel fear, worrying about the pain or damage to their bodies. So, is medical abortion painful?

Does medication hurt?

The so-called medical abortion is to use the stimulation of drugs to cause the baby to abort. This is one of the abortion methods provided by hospitals for women who have an unexpected pregnancy but do not plan to have children. Many women who are afraid of pain usually want to know whether medical abortion is really painless before having it. Today we will talk about whether medical abortion is painful or not.

If you go to the hospital and pass the pregnancy test, but don’t want to give birth to the child, and finally choose to have a medical abortion. Your doctor will usually prescribe you three days of medication, a newer endocrine drug called mifepristone.

After pregnancy, a woman's body produces the hormone progesterone, which is an element in maintaining pregnancy. When a woman takes mifepristone, the drug reduces the activity of progesterone, which can cause miscarriage.

This is the principle of medical abortion. After taking the medicine for the third day, the woman's uterus will experience strong contractions, which will prompt the uterus to expel the gestational sac villi from the body. During this process, the uterus will feel the same pain as giving birth, but the pain may not last as long. The duration of uterine contraction varies depending on your physical condition, and the intense pain usually lasts about 10-30 minutes.

In addition, if medical abortion does not completely expel the villi of the gestational sac, a uterine curettage will be required afterwards. This surgery is painful, especially when performed without anesthesia.
