What should I do if it’s too hot during confinement in summer?

In the hot summer, many people hide in air-conditioned rooms and dare not go out. However, for women who are in the confinement period after giving birth, it is a different matter. Since the body is weak after giving birth, many aspects of life are restricted. She cannot use fans, air conditioners, or eat cold drinks without restraint like normal people. Well, many women can't help but worry, what should they do if it's too hot during confinement in summer?

Things to note when you are having confinement in summer

1. Use air conditioning moderately

Mothers should note that during the summer confinement period, they should avoid postpartum heat stroke and other symptoms such as high fever due to high indoor temperatures. If the indoor temperature is too high, you should use air conditioning appropriately. Generally, lowering the room temperature to 25-28℃ will be sufficient.

2 Avoid closing doors and windows or covering your head with a blanket

Because of some traditional misconceptions, it is believed that women should not be exposed to wind during the confinement period. Therefore, some new mothers close doors and windows or cover their heads with quilts after giving birth, which actually seriously hinders the dissipation of body temperature and easily leads to heatstroke. Because the indoor temperature is already very high in summer, if you keep yourself covered, the heat inside the human body cannot be discharged. Heatstroke is not conducive to the mother's postpartum recovery.

3. Take a bath when appropriate after delivery

Experts recommend that mothers can bathe in warm water at 28-30℃ 3-7 days after delivery. In the hot summer, not washing your hair or taking a bath for a month is not only unhygienic, but may also cause skin inflammation and prickly heat; not taking a bath may also cause infection of the perineum wound. Use warm water when bathing, and dry yourself completely and immediately after bathing. Do not leave moisture on your skin to avoid catching a cold. In addition, mothers who have had a caesarean section should wait two weeks before taking a bath, depending on the recovery of the wound.

4. Eat more fruits

Fruit is healthy food. Generally speaking, fruits contain a lot of vitamins, which are very beneficial for the mental recovery of new mothers; the water, cellulose and pectin in fruits can prevent constipation; eating some fruits properly after giving birth in summer can also prevent heatstroke. Therefore, do not eat particularly cold fruits such as pears and watermelons in the first 3-4 days after delivery. In the following days, you should eat 2-3 fruits every day. Do not heat or store fruit for a long time as this will cause the nutrients to be lost.

5. Pay attention to healthy diet

Because of the delivery of the primordial baby, the mother's body will be deficient in qi and blood after delivery. She should eat more warm and nourishing foods to help restore qi and blood. Eating raw or cold food after childbirth will be detrimental to the replenishment of qi and blood, easily lead to spleen and stomach digestion and absorption dysfunction, and is not conducive to the discharge of lochia and the removal of blood stasis. Moreover, raw and cold foods have not been sterilized at high temperatures and may contain bacteria, which can easily cause gastroenteritis in postpartum women after eating. During the confinement period in summer, if the mother sweats a lot and feels thirsty, she can drink mung bean soup and tomatoes, or eat some fruits to cool down. However, she should stay away from ice cream, frozen drinks, etc.

6. Develop good confinement habits

Mothers who have just given birth in the summer need to prevent puerperal fever and heatstroke. They can let their babies sleep on a cool mat, which is much better than using air conditioning or a fan all the time. Moreover, newborns have poor sweating function and are prone to prickly heat if it is too hot. Therefore, you should not be careless about the baby's body cleanliness. Try to bathe the baby with warm water once or twice a day and change diapers frequently.
