What to do if too much milk causes breast pain

In order to maintain their figure, many postpartum mothers do not choose to breastfeed. If they do not breastfeed, they will not encounter some breast pain problems, but it will also affect the baby's nutrition. Therefore, young mothers will choose breastfeeding to maintain the baby's nutritional balance. However, when feeding during the lactation period, they will encounter many breast problems. What should they do when their breasts are swollen and painful?

What to do if too much milk causes breast pain

For the healthy growth of their babies, quite a number of mothers will choose to breastfeed, but some mothers report that their breasts are very painful every time they breastfeed, and their accessory breast glands under the armpits on both sides are swollen. Although some medications can relieve breast tenderness, mothers are always worried that the medications will affect the baby. So, besides taking medicine, is there any other solution?

During lactation, the mammary glands secrete too much milk, which causes the blood vessels and lymphatic vessels in the breasts to expand, compressing the mammary ducts and causing milk to be discharged. This causes the breasts to become swollen, painful, and hard to the touch. The body temperature also rises, and the milk accumulates into lumps, making it easy to develop diseases such as mastitis, which affects lactation. I suggest Xiao Sun try the following method, which may relieve some of the pain.

First, you can use massage method. When the breasts are too swollen or painful, you should stop breastfeeding and use a bra to support the breasts to keep the blood vessels and milk ducts unobstructed. Apply cold compresses to the breasts to relieve congestion, and gently massage from around the breasts toward the nipples to unclog the milk ducts and help eliminate skin edema.

Secondly, you can use a breast pump to avoid the pain caused by direct sucking by the baby. First, clean the breasts with warm water and massage them. Then put the sterilized glass cover on the areola to seal it tightly. Use negative pressure to suck the milk out of the breasts and put the sucked milk in the refrigerator to refrigerate or freeze it until needed.

If the pain is severe and the above two methods are ineffective, I suggest that Xiao Sun should still take medication, such as pain-relieving tablets and dispersing medicine at the same time. In addition, taking vitamin B6 can also relieve symptoms. If the pain is not relieved after care and medication, you should go to the hospital for treatment to relieve breast swelling.
